nscd crashes
I've had problems with nscd crashing every few days on my CentOS 4 mail server for a while now. The problems started maybe around CentOS 4.2, although I don't remember for sure. My debugging efforts let me to disable nscd's persistent cache, and that seemed to work for a while, but since upgrading to CentOS 4.4, the...

nscd segfaulting on centos 4.5
Does anyone know if there is a fix for nscd segfaulting after a short period of time. Googling for it came up with one result that suggested deleting the files in /var/db/nscd , but that didn't help. Another result was about run away processes which is not the problem I'm having. They are x86_64 boxes. output from /var/log/message...

3.0.4: smbd's + nscd's = 100% CPU; load > 4
Hi Everyone, the new 3.0.4 Samba installation seems to work find except that from time to time but at least a couple of times a day one or more smbd processes start running at 20%-40% CPU each and 6 nscd processes then share the remaining CPU power. System 70%-80% users the rest 20%-30%. Load rises fast to over 4. I'm sure that each such process is just idling, but why does it engage so much nscd processing? As soon as I kill the excessive smbd process(es) the situation drops to normal, i.e....

nscd
...ect that the network folks updated their internal nameservers (which are M$) about that time... but... we got this Thurs. Friday, I went to look, lunchtime, at a story, and back to the same. Later, and I think I was playing around, it came back. Just now, over lunch, it failed... until I restarted nscd. My manager tells me it's caching... but it seems to be caching momentary failures. So: has anyone else seen oddness that might be related to nscd? mark

NSCD On Linux Question
I finally ran across the following post: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2006-May/120798.html Turns out my earlier post to this list for help stems from the NSCD problem like this person had. I changed the negative TTLs in nscd.conf to 3s and changed the -t argument to 15 in my add machine script. This solved my join domain problem. Before all this, NSCD was not running. When NSCD is not running I have the following situation: 1. getent passwd always...

CentOs6- Use nscd for offline LDAP
Dear All, I'm thinking about connecting the 15 or so laptops in our organisation to LDAP. Now I'm trying to use nscd in order to enable the users to work when being offline. The test laptop is installed for this occasion, updated CentOs6.3. Following the advise I found on a few posts I modified */etc/nscd.conf : * server-user nscd logfile /var/log/nscd.log...

nscd and winbindd
Dear samba folks, I have a special question regarding the simultaneous operation of nscd and winbindd on the same host: We are running in a Samba file server setup where the nsswitch.conf looks like this: passwd: files ldap group: files ldap shadow: files ldap hosts: files dns wins networks: files protocols: db files services: d...

resilience suggestion
...pleased with our trials of dovecot to replace UW-IMAP. But (ah!) we have hit one particular problem, in which we think dovecot could probably benefit from a resilience improvement. We're running dovecot on Fedora Core 5 (FC5), with passwd map details supplied by NIS. We have found that "nscd" sometimes thinks that a username is invalid, even though it is valid. So when "deliver" attempts a delivery to the INBOX of that username, it receives "user unknown" from the name service, and then does a 5xx permanent failure of valid email. >From the user perspective...

Problems with Openldap and nscd
...4 Intel servers (Intel server board, Intel Case, Adaptec 2100S Raid controller, Seaget cheetah disks, Xeon 2400, 1 GB RAM. We updated the BIOS, downloaded all updated RPM's, etc. LDAP is used for samba, postfix and courier-imap/pop3. The total configuration is working fine, except Openldap/NSCD. The problem was that a server locked after a while. When is not predictable, but more users caused the problem to be sooner. Further analyses learned that LDAP and NSCD were the problem. Problems became manifest after addding 3500 account to the LDAP directory. Server was not working reliable...

nscd strange behaviour
Hi there group, I have nscd running on 6.3 with backports patches, but maybe this will apply to the 7.0? What's the problem: i have nss setup with nss_pg module and authenticates passing through pam pg module. I have nscd running so I can make fewer queries to the pg server when system retrieves uid<->userid. Bu...

pam_ldap + nscd
Hi, I'd like to use nscd for passwd+group caching. pam_ldap is configured and works (e.g. 'id foo' returns the correct user id if foo is present in ldap). If I start nscd manually (not started by default), 'id foo' returns 'No such user'. As soon as I stop nscd, 'id foo' starts working ag...

NSCD, should it be used or not with LDAP, pam, nss
Again, another confusing issue in two how-to's I'm trying to resolve. In the SBE (samba-3 by example) Pg 161 in the PDF states. (It's actually page 200 of the PDF, but 161 of the numbered document pages.) "The name service caching daemon (nscd) is a primary cause of difficulties with name resolution, particularly where winbind is used." But the Authconfig in the IDEALX scripts appears to use NSCD, and the documents specifically talk about the desirability of caching for nss_ldap and pam_ldap. (Section 4.2.1 of rev 1.10) (Quote: if...

nscd, ldap and the root/Administrator account
...DC with an Openldap backend and also have a number of Samba domain member servers that lookup the ldap directory for their account information. I use ssh to perform various administration tasks. There is an account called Administrator in the LDAP directory that has a UID of 0 . However, after nscd has been started, the next time i login to one of the member servers using the root account my username is reported as Administrator and not as root as expected. This causes various issues with ssh keys etc.. I have the following lines in my nsswitch.conf file. > passwd: files ldap >...

Slow pkginstalls due to long door_calls to nscd
...m installing a zone onto two different V445s running S10U4 and the zones are taking hours to install (about 1000 packages), that is, the problem is identical on both systems. A bit of trussing and dtracing has shown that the pkginstalls being run by the zoneadm install are making door_call calls to nscd that are taking very long, so far observed to be 5 to 40 seconds, but always in times divisible by 5 seconds (5, 10, 15, etc.), leading to the thought that it is one or more name service timeouts. Eventually, once the door_calls finish, the actual package install is very quick. There may be a simp...

IDMAP Issue
...t; rowland at devstation:~$ getent passwd rowland > rowland:*:10000:10000:Rowland Penny:/home/rowland:/bin/bash Of course. But there are issues. getent passwd -s ldap rowland, will answer the same question from a differnt service. Normally there is an order in nsswitch.conf, but if you have a NSCD deamon installed, it might mess that up. Maybe you mean that the ID mapping would work, but not accessing them at the same time for normal operation? There is no way in nscd to disable forwarding from getUID lookups to getName lookups. (So to speak). The moment you read a filesystem part that...
