Norco''s new storage appliance
Hey all, Has anyone else noticed Norco''s recently-announced DS-520 and thought ZFS-ish thoughts? It''s a five-SATA, Celeron-based desktop NAS that ships without an OS. http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=8&modelno=ds-520 What practical impact is a 32-bit processor going to have on a ZFS system? (I know this relies on speculation, but) Might anyone know anything about Norco''s usual chipsets to guess about OpenSolaris compatibility? adam

KVM vs ESXi
...r and am tossing between VMware and KVM for this build. I already have experience with ESX, we use it at work, but I'm debating trying out KVM for a while. The server itself is a budget build using a Supermicro X8SAX board w/ i7-950 & 12GB RAM, LSI 3081 SAS RAID (1068e based), rolled into a NorcoTek 16 Bay SAS case. Not fancy but also decent enough for home use. I don't expect high performance out of this unit so unless the gear is hopelessly outclassed, I'm not in a position to entertain upgrading. Right now forking over $1000-$1500 on a $2000 system for a pair of higher end LSI/3ware...

Port multiplier support in megaraid* module for LSI LOGIC LSI00042 PCI-X SATA II Controller?
...ives and uses two port multipliers. The only drawbacks I can see is that it looks like they could've fit 15 drives with three multipliers, and two drives need direct connections to the controller. That's 4 esata ports used ( 2 x 5 port multiplier + 2 direct to hard drive ). http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=8&modelno=DS-1220 The SC-SATA12RM is rackmountable, uses 4 multi-lane SAS connectors and holds 12 drives. Having full bandwidth to each drive can have its advantages for streaming reads and writes, but the seeky workload I expect won't benefit much from t...

External SATA enclosures: SiI3124 and CentOS 5?
Tired of "little problems" trying to keep 7 drives working in an old desktop computer, I'm considering an external SATA drive enclosure with a controller card based on the Sil3124. http://www.ipcdirect.net/servlet/Detail?no=152 I'm a bit concerned about long-term support, namely that the company's driver page only lists drivers through RedHat 4.

ZFS Usage in Warehousing (lengthy intro)
Dear all, we''re currently looking forward to restructure our hardware environment for our datawarehousing product/suite/solution/whatever. We''re currently running the database side on various SF V440''s attached via dual FC to our SAN backend (EMC DMX3) with UFS. The storage system is (obviously in a SAN) shared between many systems. Performance is mediocre in terms

Cheap ZFS homeserver.
So after toying around with some stuff a few months back I got bogged down and set this project aside for a while. Time to revisit. <BR><BR> Looking around there still is not a good "these cards/motherboards" work list. the HCL is hardly ever updated, and its far more geared towards business use than hobbyist/home use. So bearing all of that in mind I will need the
