Red Hat is Planning To Deprecate KDE on RHEL By 2024
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/11/02/rhel_deprecates_kde/ That's still several years in the future, of course. I use Mate on all of my machines rather than Gnome or KDE and I'm sure many of you fine folks do the same. But it's interesting nonetheless. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

Load a package without installing it
...ve written a little script that inspects the package description and loads dependencies, data and code - http://gist.github.com/180883. It's obviously not very general (being tailored to my description files) and won't work for packages containing C code, but I hope you might find it useful nonetheless. Any comments would be appreciated. Hadley -- http://had.co.nz/

installing contributed programs
Dear R-help, I'm sure this is contained within the documentation, but I have not yet located it (with good effort nonetheless). I am attempting to install the binary for randomForests. After unpacking the zip, I extracted the contents to my R-2.8.1 folder. However, when I try to execute the command library(randomForest) I get an unable to locate error. Is there another library request that needs to be made? I see that the...

Any ideas what is causing this? It's no big deal as I've got things working, but I'm curious nonetheless... Alfred

FTP server down?
...this is the right place to mention it, but ..... The server downloads.asterisk.org was refusing FTP connections last night, and still does not seem to be accepting them this morning. FTP may not be "modern" or "trendy", but the ability to navigate around folders textually is nonetheless extremely handy when using a machine with no X server, from its own console. -- AJS Answers come *after* questions.

[LLVMdev] Shouldn't DAGCombine insert legal nodes?
...eate fully legal nodes. Inside DAGCombine this is specified by two flags: LegalTypes being true means that all nodes must have legal types. LegalOperations being true means that all nodes must have legal operations (as well as types: LegalTypes will also be true). So if LegalTypes is true and nonetheless a constant with an illegal type is being created then that is a DAG combiner bug. Ciao, Duncan.

Possible bug involving LDA and Namespaces
...en in the following dovecot.conf excerpt: > namespace private { > separator = . > prefix = INBOX. > inbox = yes > } > > # For Mac Mail.app > namespace private { > list = no > separator = / > prefix = INBOX/ > inbox = no > hidden = yes > } Nonetheless, when deliver starts up it believes that both namespaces have "list = yes". Is this potentially a bug in the way deliver reads the configuration file data? I've not looked into the code yet as I imagine that getting up to speed on it might take some time. As another data point, act...

Shutdown problem from virsh
...rom virsh and therefore messes up the shutdown of the whole Debian 9 server. The things is, this additional KVM guest is not a regular Linux guest. It is DiskStation Manager (DSM) 6.2 from Synology (with XPEnology as the boot loader). I know this setup isn't supported by libvirt nor Synology. Nonetheless, I wonder if anyone would have idea on that matter ? Even some suggestions might help me find what needs fixing. Thank you, Best regards, Thomas M.

[LLVMdev] Compiling whole programs to bitcode
...the program, not the library ((or else you'd get a link > error when building normally)). Ah, but that's not the case, not with modern C++ compilers - it is perfectly possible for a templated function to be declared in a header, defined in a .cc file, called on a user-defined type, and nonetheless instantiated on the fly. Of course that indeed wouldn't work in the simple C linkage model, which is why modern C++ compilers use one or another sort of black magic behind the scenes to deal with it. Is it documented how Clang deals with it?

missing sh.exe file when running "R CMD INSTALL test"
..."make: sh.exe: Command not found" and "make: *** [pkg-test] Error 127". I get the same error message if a try the command "make pkg-test". I saw in an old FAQ a suggestion to move sh.eve to the C:\bin\ folder, but my C: root does not have a "bin" folder. Nonetheless, I created one and put sh.exe there and it provided no help (I didn't expect it too). Can anyone help me?

[LLVMdev] moving to svn?
...cs in >>mind. > > I can confirm, that tailor converts LLVM CVS with all history preserved > to mercurial repository without any visible troubles. I'm not sure if I just took HEAD or converted the whole llvm repo. Personally, I like darcs for the atomic theory of patches. YMMV. Nonetheless, I track llvm's repo via tailor and I do keep the history as it evolves. If I were permitted to run a webserver outside the corporate firewall, I'd demonstrate a cvs-svn tailor-ized repo. -scooter

Trouble getting in icecast Directory
Yes, it is a "vague term" but it should match nonetheless. Is the directory code open source? If so, I don't mind locating the error and proposing a correction. ...r to 4.8, without winbind in the picture, a windows user named "rab", for instance, could be authenticated by AD, but would assume the identity of the Unix user "rab", with all of his Unix defined groups. Of course, this is not full emulation of a Windows server experience, but nonetheless it is the behavior we wanted and worked well in our environment where every AD user who needed access to a Unix server had a corresponding Unix ID assigned with that user's uid, gids, identical on all the Unix servers. That is the "legacy" behavior we desire. Is it still possible to...

Unexpected I(NULL) output
...s(I(NULL)) # "AsIs" (as expected) print(I(NULL)) # list() (not expected! should be NULL) is.null(I(NULL)) # FALSE (not expected! should be TRUE) So, I() does not behave according to its documentation. In R, it is not possible to give NULL attributes, but I(NULL) attempts to do that nonetheless, using the structure() function. Probably: 1/ structure() should not accept NULL as input since the goal of structure() is to set some attributes, something cannot be done on NULL. 2/ I() could accept NULL, but, as an exception, not set an "AsIs" class attribute on it. This would be in li...
