ext3 nodump attribute inheritance
Hi, in the past I was considering the ways to back up files in my Linux home box. The important part of such thinking is how to set exclusion paths wisely. I finally found out that setting ext2/ext3 nodump attribute using chattr for files, but mainly directories, suits me best. Setting the match (regexp) lists for the backup script exetrnally seems sub-optimal to me, since my dump/nodump data arrangement is not stable in time. I started using Schily's star because of its multiple advantages over...

No nonodump...
I'm not sure where else to ask about this, so please excuse me if this is the wrong forum. In trying to remove a 'nodump' flag on a directory with the 'chflags' command I have noticed that the 'nonodump' flag does not function. I see an open PR for the problem: o [2003/01/09] i386/46912 johan chflags nonodump fails I was wondering when this might be dealt with? Else is there another way to remove...

[Bug 2810] Add support for nodump flag
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2810 ------- Additional Comments From wayned@samba.org 2005-06-21 09:20 ------- Created an attachment (id=1282) --> (https://bugzilla.samba.org/attachment.cgi?id=1282&action=view) Very preliminary nodump support Here is a patch that might work with FreeBSD (I have no way to test it to know for sure -- this is based on a patch for GNU tar that I saw). The NODUMP flag-testing code would need to be improved to be compatible with more systems before this option would be considered for inclusion in rs...

try.Silent
In an email to the help list John Chambers wrote about the function helpSilent which is in the methods package, pointing out that there is no restrictive reason to be in this package. I did not know about this function and just incorporate it in several functions of the geoR package where a much less elegant solution was being used. I guess other packages could use it as well. Therefore,

removing visible journal.dat
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I created all my ext3 partitions a while back, so the journal.dat file is visable. I'd like to remove them and use the new tune2fs functionality. Can I just mount the drives as ext2, rm journal.dat, tune2fs -j /dev/hd?? and then remount as ext3? Or am I missing something? thanks! - -- Douglas J. Hunley (Linux User #174778)
