Mac OS X + Samba + NT = Snag
...t currently have a DNS name, so I had to use the IP address. ping client from server -- works fine (client has a DNS name). TEST 3: PASS ran smbclient -L server -- asked for password (security=server), after supplying a valid password, the complete list of shares was displayed. TEST 4: PASS ran nmbclient -B server __SAMBA__ and it correctly reported the __SAMBA__ entry with a <00> on the end at the correct IP address. TEST 5: CONDITIONAL FAIL ran nmbclient -B client '*' and it reports: name_query failed to find name * However I don't believe this has a bearing on the problem I...

Final touches to SAMBA: help please
...tach 95 an NT4 machines to it. I got the compiled Samba off the net somewhere and did a pkgadd. It installed fine. I have read the man pages and the FAQ, and run the tests on the UNIX side and all are fine. FYI, these are: smbclient -L nmblookup -B (on server and client) nmblookup -d 2 '*' nmbclient '\\av\tmp' (av is unix server ame) I can see the server from my pc in DOS an 95, I can map drives in DOS, and see the shares under 95 and NT4 (as defined in the smb.conf file), but as soon as I try to attach thru windows it gives me password errors. NT asks for a username, yet still fails....

Any suggestions would be appreciated. ======================================================================= Howard Johnson @fa...

No names get resolved, but if I use smbclient with the same name and specify the IP everything is fine. Just as additional info, ping, telnet etc work fine, I have 'name resolve order = lmhosts wins bcast host' in smb...

Looking up NetBIOS names
Is it possible to ask a machine for its NetBIOS name if it's running either Windows or Samba? I tried a few various nmblookup and smbclient command lines to no avail. I would like to be able to query a machine (by IP) and have it respond with its nb name. I've noted that if I perform an smbclient -L -I on a machine, it will not list its shares unless I get the NetBIOS name correct...
