Package group "X Window System" has disappeared
...imal system.
2. yum groupinstall "X Window System"
3. yum install gdm gnome-classic-session gnome-terminal liberation-fonts

This morning, the package group "X Window System" seems to have
disappeared. This is embarrassing.
What happened?

Slightly OT: check creation of a group
...doesn't, then create it.
Only thing I found is:
if [ grep medintux /etc/group ]; then
continue
else
groupadd medintux
fi
Apparently I can't seem to "negate" the test, e. g. something like
if !(grep medintux /etc/group)
Any suggestions for the correct syntax here ?
Thanks,
Niki

SquidAnalyzer: minor trouble building RPM
...rmation in the spec file is wrong, it indicates 6.2, but the
version of SquidAnalyzer is 6.2-1.
Unfortunately when I insert the correct version in the spec file, I get
this:

error: line 5: Illegal char '-' in: Version: 6.2-1
What can I do now?

Testing and using a microphone
Hi,
What's the most simple way to check if my microphone works on a plain
CentOS 5.3 desktop? Is there a simple way, for example, to record voice
into a simple .wav file?

Monitoring a remote server with Conky ?
.... g.: no graphical server, nothing), but why not install
just xorg-x11-server-Xorg, then use Conky and forward it to my local
display with SSH -X ? I'm pondering this question, thinking about the
possible issues...
... so maybe one of you guys here has come up with some solution ?

Remote identity management
...SMB, ...
The networks I'll have to deal with are 100% GNU/Linux (better: 100%
CentOS). So my first question is: which solution is the "best" for such
a configuration ? By "best" I mean some compromise between "easy" and
"reliable".
Any suggestions ?

Display a warning message at a certain time ?
Hi,
I'm currently installing a CentOS 5 desktop as a public internet access
point. The machine shuts down every day automatically at 22:30. Is there
a way I can display a message in GNOME at 22:15 warning the user that
the machine will shutdown in 15 minutes ?
Any suggestions ?

Simple audio recording app?
...my microphone to work (mainly to use it with Skype).
I've just been looking for a simple audio recording app, as I vaguely
remember having seen such a thing before, only I can't seem to find it
anymore. I'm using the default GNOME desktop with the latest CentOS 5.
Any suggestions?

x86_64 package mess ?
...'s the first time I
work with this sort of hardware. Doing rpm -qa | sort | less shows that
most of the packages seem to be installed twice: once for i386
architecture, and then again for x86_64.
Is this normal? Or did I mess up something during install (thought I
wouldn't know what)?

Recommendations for good CentOS 7 documentation
...'m fluent in german, french and english.
I have a good books about 5.x: "RHEL 5 Unleashed" from Sams,
"Foundations of CentOS Linux" and "The Definitive Guide to CentOS", both
from Apress.
Can anyone recommend anything similar on 7.x?

Custom user profile for GNOME 3?
...9;ve done this successfully with desktop environments like
GNOME 2, Xfce or KDE. I just copied over the relevant files from
~/.config, ~/.kde4 (IIRC), ~/.gconf or whatever to /etc/skel, and newly
created users had their settings ready.
Anybody knows how I can manage this with GNOME 3?
Cheers,

Thanks Niki! Google even does a pretty good job of translating them for
those of us who are Francophonally challended.
I find it humorous that it talks about "throwing" an application. :)
I guess the original was something like "launching", only in French.

I also googled a bit, and I think in this domain, fail2ban will be my

I have this strange feeling that the next step in the "wise" direction

Any suggestions?

Simple way to banish IP addresses ?
...dth is being eaten by some
chinese folks trying to brute-force-ssh their way into the machine.
Is there a simple way to banish either single IP addresses or, maybe
even better, whole IP classes ? I know it's feasible with iptables, but
is there something more easily configurable ?

Niki

Add instantly active local user accounts *with* password using useradd -p option ?
...bc123 -m glagaffe
And put that line in a script, so the account is *instantly* activated.
I tried it, but to no avail. Looks like there's some burning loop I have
to jump through first :o)
No security considerations here for the moment, since it's for testing.
Any idea how this works?
