patch for rsync: provides "nice = N" option
...chine
when the rsync kicks in. We set a --bwlimit to cut down on the I/O,
but we also wanted to lower the CPU priority as well.
We've had real problems with the rsync backups adversely affecting
production workloads, and though it's probably possible to build
some kind of wrapper that nices the process priority up before
execing the real daemon, that would apply the nice to all modules
served by that daemon. That's not what we wanted.
Using this:
In an rsyncd.conf:
[fullbackup]
path = /
...
nice = 10
This *adds* 10 to the current nice, which *lowers* the CPU pri...

PSOCK cluster and renice
Hi all,
Is it possible to use the 'renice' option together with parallel
clusters of type 'PSOCK'? The help page for parallel::makeCluster is
not specific about which options are supported on which types and I am
getting the following message when passing renice = 19 :
> cl <- parallel::makeCluster(2, renice = 19)
nice: ?+19?: No such file or directory
Kind regards,

PSOCK cluster and renice
Looks like a bug to me due to wrong assumptions about 'nice'
arguments, but could be because a "non-standard" 'nice' is used. If
we do:
> trace(system, tracer = quote(print(command)))
Tracing function "system" in package "base"
we see that the system call used is:
> cl <- parallel::makePSOCKcluster(2L, renice = 19)
Tracing system(cmd, wait

PSOCK cluster and renice
Hi Henrik,
Thanks for the detailed in fast reply!
My guess would be that the confusion comes from the different use of nice and renice.
The workraund you provided work fine! Thanks a lot.
Best,
Andreas

Is there any script guru on the list that can help me.
I'm trying to start asterisk with nice -5.
Normally the command would be:
nice -5 asterisk
but asterisk start from the scrip on Gentoo as -U asterisk -G asterisk
Here is the script:

need net
use zaptel
}
start() {
local OPTS USER GROUP
if [[ -n "${ASTERISK_NICE}" ]];

OT: headless fanless silent 2 HDs micro server/pc...
Hey,
A bit out of topic but I am looking for a micro server/pc if anyone knows a descent one...
I found many nice NAS but I would like to have full access to the OS (install CentOS, etc).
Dream one would be
- Very quiet (fanless) since it will sit in my bedroom.
- Headless
- Small.
- 2/3 HDs (2.5" are ok) for RAID1 (hardware RAID would be nice, and with BBC even more).- 1 or 2 GB NICs

Produce graph that looks nice on screen and on paper
Hi all,
I made a dotplot() with lattice, which comes out nice on the graphics
device. I can save this as a eps using postscript() and include this in
a word document. This prints nice, but does not look good on screen.
If I produce a pdf, it is nice on screen, but not on paper. How can I
save a graph that looks nice on paper and on screen?

Feature Request: Settable 'nice' value.
So, some of us would like to be able to set the nice value on puppetd.
However, we don''t want all of our services (and some of our execs)
re-niced.
Would it be feasible/practical to have the ability to set the nice
value explicitly on Service and Exec calls?
Thanks,
Trevor

DRBD + Remus High IO load frozen
Dear all,
I have installed DRBD 8.3.11 compiled from sources. However the backend
block will freeze if there is high IO load. I use Remus to support high
availability and checkpointing is controlled by remus for each 400ms.
If I check the Iostat I got the idle CPU will decreasing extremely each

will freeze and damage the

Samba performance issues
Hi all
We are implementing samba-ldap to act as an nt pdc and are seeing
performance problems.
We have a 1ghz, 3gb Ram, 36gb box that is running samba-2.2.5 and
openldap-2.0.23 under redhat 7.3 with kernel 2.4.18-3.
Clients are all Win2k SP3.
All the ldap requests are to the localhost interface.
The box is acting as the PDC for the domain, and also sharing diskspace
and printers.
When we get

printing tabular data nicely
Hi R-heplers,
I would like to print various matrices, dataframes, tables, etc to
files, preferably nicely formatted postscript for import into papers.
Is there a way to do this?
I know ?cat, ?writeLines, ?format, ?paste. But I am not sure of a good
combination of these in order to get a nice looking table of information.
Any ideas? I guess I want (almost) publication ready output, just

Mongrel and proxying with Apache 2 mod_proxy
Hi all,
I''ve just spent some time going through trying to get mongrel & apache
2.0 working with mod_proxy. I thought I''d share what I''ve found in
case someone is going through the same exercise.
Of late, I''ve been using mongrel (lovely, btw) to run my rails apps.
Since I have a couple of different rails apps running on the machine,
I thought it be nice to

dovecot process nice value
My imap processes seem to all be running with a nice value of -15 (top
priority). Is this usual? Not sure if this is a dovecot setting or
something going on with my own system configuration somewhere.
I know the userdb query can set the nice value but mine (a mysql query)
does not...
We're having problems with our mail partition being absolutely thrashed
and thought over-strong imap

Nice work Alain
Hey Alain,
Nice work on the updated admonitions here:
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Wiki/Editing
IMHO they look great, and a nice improvement on the previous set.
Thanks for the hard work making our wiki pages look great!

Starting a process at a specified nice value.
I wonder if someone could point me to the appropriate docs for my question? If
I would like to cause my system to always start 'smbd' processes at priority
7 for example, how would I go about doing that.
I'm assuming there's a better way than running a cronjob every minute to
renice existing processes.
I'd appreciate some help pointing me in the right direction.
Thanks.

Asterisk Call Monitor and soxmix error
Asterisk Monitor seems to be working fine. Though the problem I am
having is the two files (in & out) muxing.
I added ,m to the string, yet the call records two files still, and I
get the resulting error, at the bottom.

Authenticate against NT Domain Group Membership
Hola folks,
How do I configure a share under Samba 2.2 using DOMAIN security to allow
all members of a specified NT domain group access to a particular share?
For example, something like:
[test]
comment = Test Share
path = /mnt/share/test
nt group = Nice-users, Wonderful Users
Where Nice-users and Wonderful Users are NT domain groups? So if User X is
a member of Nice-users, she would be

Need to link to something like JasperReports
Hello everyone,
Has anyone linked Rails to a report generator such as Jasper Reports
(http://jasperreports.sourceforge.net/)? At the moment, I think I
need something along these lines for a project I''m working on, so it''d
be nice to know if anyone''s used it before before I bring it up as a
suggestion.
Doesn''t have to be JasperReports, and in fact I''d
