Poor performance on NFS-exported ZFS volumes
I''m seeing some pretty pitiful performance using ZFS on a NFS server, with a ZFS volume exported (only with rw=host.foo.com,root=host.foo.com opts) and mounted on a Linux host running kernel 2.4.31. This linux kernel I''m working with is limited in that I can only do NFSv2 mounts... irregardless of that aspect, I''m sure something''s amiss.
I mounted the zfs-based nfs share on the linux host and tested it like so and ran tests with dd:
---------------
[root at hercules]/>mount -o rw,vers=2,hard,intr,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 ds2.rs:/ds-store/rs/test...

Getting started with NFS

docs) and I have a few machines to experiment with.
After about two hours of reading and experimenting, I must admit the
documentation is confusing, to say the least. Although some step-by-step
tutorials are provided, none of them work. For example, the RHEL
deployment guide mentions NFSv2, NFSv3 and NFSv4... but as much as I
poke around, I don't even find a way to checkout which one of the
version I'm running.
So...
1) Can you suggest some reliable and well-written (think:
newbie-friendly) documentation about NFS?

yup,
this needs nfs v4 support in klibc nfsmount.
would be could to get that soon postetch,
but someone will have to implement it ;-)

compatibility. That said, if you can include (some of) these patches
in the canonical version, that makes it easier for me to track future
improvements in klibc.
The kinit rewrite stays a bit closer to the nfsroot.txt
kernel documentation, does a fallback from TCP to UDP to NFSv2
if needed, and handles only NFS: no mounting of /sys, no pivotroot,
no searching for root file systems other than NFS. This should
make it play nicer with the rest of the initrd; I can post it if
anyone has a use for this. But I digress.
The following patches need extra attention:

I stream read - stale NFS file handle (reboot of server)
In the old days NFS Shared Path had a static handle (ie a number),
normal based on some number pulled out of the file system/inode.
To fix (well work around) a security issue, for about 10+ years now,
when a NFS server reboots, it generates a new random handle for the NFS
Share. (sever may generate a new random handle per mount request)
The NFS Stale Handle happens when the client is still

Problem:
3 times now, the server has gotten into an unusable state.
(twice was with the 2.4.18-4smp redhat kernel, once with the

When it enters this state any process that accesses the large
mail data partition (also exported over NFSv2) will stop in disk
wait and never complete.
The first two times (with the 2.4.18-4smp kernel) all access to any
disk caused the process to go into disk wait and never complete. With
the 2.4.18-5smp kernel, only access to the main data partition caused
the process to hang, other file systems (incl...

NFS - inotify vs kqueue
Hi,
I've seen some chatter on NFS boards about kqueue being more reliable
than inotify when used in NFSv3 and NFSv2. The chatter is a bit old so I
don't know if it is true anymore.
Anyone have pro/con experience with dovecot on the inotify/kqueue
question when using NFS storage?
I realize that kqueue is probably a bit slower and causes some delay
with IDLE. Also, it may not really make any difference wh...

still a bit annoying since MTA just appends the new mails, we wouldn't
really need to reparse the whole file then, just the new mails.
- I should use link() instead of relying on O_EXCL which doesn't work
with NFSv2 (or Linux's NFSv3 client).
- .subscriptions and .customflags files still aren't NFS-safe

NFSV4?
Hi Timo,
I just read about NFSv4 now being included in SuSE and Redhat Enterprise
versions, and although I don't use it myself, wondered how this will
impact Dovecot for those using it?
Will it make life easier? Or is it even supported currently?
Just curious... thanks...

64KB in two distinct files.
Then using 'od' i look at the result, and i see some blocks of zero
inside the file. The size of these zeroed blocks seems to be multiple
of h'4000.
NB: My clients and servers are colocalised on the same machine.
I obtained the same result with nfsv2 and nfsv3 mount option. I also
have the same result using ordered and writeback modes.
NB: when i have changed the program in order to initialize the pattern
for each record i cannot reproduce the problem ( it seems the timing was
changed, as more CPU was done before each write request).

An update of the ext3 journalling filesystem for 2.4 kernels
is available at
http://www.uow.edu.au/~andrewm/linux/ext3/
Patches are against 2.4.6-ac1 and 2.4.6.
Changes since 0.0.8 include:
- Multiplied the version numbering by ten to cater for bugfix
releases against the 0.9.0 stream.
- The main thrust has been the removal of a number of changes in
the core kernel which were required
