subsetting with by() or other function??
I think I must be missing something obvious, but I'm having trouble
getting a data transformation to work on groupings of data within a data
frame (csss3) as defined by 2 factors (population, locid). The data are
sorted by year within locid within population and I want to lag another
variable (dbc), i.e, shift them down by 1 row replacing the first row with
NA, within groups defined by

OT - What are these crazy messages?
I'm just dying to know what the origin of these messages with the txt
attachments is. I get quite a few here, and even some in other mailing
lists. But they're all unique; the attachment filename starts with ATT
(followed by four or five digits), and are 192 bytes long. The senders
are often different.
Anyone got a bead on this?

apologies for duplicate posts - btw what's the real diff between gmane.network.samba.general and mailing.unix.samba?
...ex uk) and searched
for "samba" it showed a few hits but "gmane.network.samba.general"
showed as containing no posts but "mailing.unix.samba" showed a bit more
than 20'000 so I subscribed to that and sent a slurr of messages with
questions and followups to that newslist over the weekend, and my
questions did show up in "mailing.unix.samba". But not having received a
single answer by the end of the weekend I thought something was a little
strange.
So I went to check the samba.org archives and found that my messages had
not made it to the official mai...

Re: Asterisk diskless server, a web page with more info?
...few requests for this info, so I thought I'd copy this
to the list as well. Since I don't really monitor the list anymore,
queries should be directed back to me if you have problems.

Newbie questions from South Africa: Initial setup
Hi All,
I have been researching Asterisk for a few days now and have read
hundreds of web pages and other documents. While some things are getting
clearer, others are not.
I have managed to install Asterisk 1.0.1 on Debian testing (simple as
'apt-get install asterisk'). I understand FXS/FXO, codecs available,
feature and functionality available etc. I have found several "Getting

need help opening a file
Hi, I can't believe I am unable to do this. I just installed R (never used
it before, but want to learn it). At present, though. all I want to do is
export a data file (specifically "crabs" in the MASS library) to a text file
for use in SPSS. It allows me to peek into the dataset, using the command
head(crabs) but I can neither view the entire file nor can I seem to export
it to a

Problem with fitted.value function
Who can help me in finding the right fitted-value-function?Based upon a
linear model (2-dimensional, 1 result-variable and 1 input-variable).
I found the perfect regression model (not always simply linear) by the
function lm(). Based on the given input and output tuples. For these exact
input values I can get the exact fitted values by the function
fitted.values.
The problem is, once I want to

Peeling Specification
After reading the recent thread
[http://www.xiph.org/archives/vorbis/200211/0057.html] on the vorbis
list about bitrate peeling, I was wondering if it would be possible for
xiph.org to post a specification, outline, flowchart, or a drawing on a
napkin of what the basic operations of bit peeling would entail. If
there was some sort of starting point, then it may be a little more
inviting for
