VirtualBox 4.1.x can reproduce bug 45
Short summary:
I think bug #45
http://bugzilla.syslinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45
"Regression in Syslinux 6.xx. Doesn't 'hand over' to linux kernel"
can be reproduced using VirtualBox 4.1.x while trying to boot a
relatively-newish Linux kernel.
Now, for more details...
Under VBox 4.1.x and using ISOLINUX 4.xx, a newish Linux kernel boots
correctly.
Under VBox 4.1.x and using ISOLINUX 6.xx, the same newish Linux
kernel fails to boot. This is the same exact system, except for the
version of Syslinux (ISOLINUX) used in th...

a proposal regarding documentation
...a new mailing list be established

The purpose of the list would be to discuss

Pro
If it works, there would be better documentation.
It would be an excellent opportunity for newish
and/or less technical people to contribute to R.
In some respects such people would be much more
valuable to the process than very experienced

It could take some pressure off of R-core.

It needs at least one person (and probably more)

[OT} Problem with 90MB Initrd

Apologies for this slight off-topic.
Who "they" would be?
Let's not fool ourselves. HP _might_ solve possible issues regarding
their firmware when a (current) MS OS / bootloader shows some problem
for users of newish HP hardware. Let me emphasize: HP will _only_
consider publishing a firmware update under certain specific
conditions, and any issue related (even loosely) with using
syslinux.efi in HP hardware is not one of such circumstances.
Any non-MS bootloader will probably have "disadvantages"...

SAS raid controllers
Is anyone running either the newish Adaptec 5805 or the new LSI (3ware) 9750
sas raid controllers in a production environment with Centos 5.3/5.4?
The low price of these cards makes me suspicious, compared to the more
expensive pre-merger 3ware cards and considerably more expensive Areca
ARC-1680. I've been 'burned' by...

acs_map
I'm having trouble compiling wine on a newish box.
The problem is a missing symbol 'acs_map' cropping up in
dlls/ttydrv/graphics.o. The symbol is not directly in the relevant
source file so it seems to be from a macro or typedef but extensive
grepping has not identified the source. I suspect the problem is a
package missing in the dis...

HP laptops with CentOS 7?

its really the CPU now that matters, rather than the 'chipset', as most
all the base IO devices are in the CPU (ethernet, sata, video).
I think Kaby Lake support is still a sketchy, thats Core gen 7. (i-7xxx).
I'm not sure what the state of Skylake is (gen 6)

Time arithmetic
I am a bit worried I am reinventing the wheel. Isn't there a calendar
system in R?
I have written a function to add months to a date and return the number of
days resulting. I am newish to R so I am hoping there is a package that
can do this sort of date arithmetic for me...

## Get day, month and the year

Specify glibc version to run/compile wine against?
If I understand it correctly, Wine will work properly with either a (newish) glibc and a (newish) linux kernel with NPTL/TLS support, or with an old (2.2.x) glibc and an old kernel.
I have an "old" (2.4.x) kernel without NPTL/TLS support, and a new glibc (2.3.4 or something). Is it possible to install an old glibc as well, and compile/run Wine against it? If so...

reformat time from hhmm
Hi,
I'm newish to R, a recent convert from Matlab... So far I'm impressed, and
determined to solve the following problem, which seems like it should be
easy:
I have a long (millions of points) data series recorded with a datalogger
that produced a timestamp in 4 columns: Year, Day of Year, Time in (H)HMM

let's see what the app store says
...ich is a solid indication that
the editing+display coupling produced by "composer" trumps
the use-any-text-editor-you-like generality "marked" offers.
(note also that "marked" is even at a much lower price-point.)
and maybe the biggest surprise of all, to some, is the newish
"markdownnote", which appears at #115 in productivity apps.
"markdownnote" has been available on ipad for a while, and
is something of an enigma. its big liability is that it supports
nothing more than gruber's flawed formulation, but its asset
is that it has the edit-on-o...

Xll.options().
This question seemed to me to be more appropriate for r-devel
than for r-help. My apologies if this is not the case.
Recently I installed ``cairo'' on my lap-top so that I could make
use of the (newish) polypath() function, with on-screen graphics.
(The polypath() function does not work with X11(type="Xlib").)
The installation went smoothly, X11(type="cairo") works just fine,
and polypath() works just fine.
However the default "type" for X11() remains "Xlib&qu...

How Can I ...

> windows we can provide more detailed guidance.
something similar to this might work for you
$ sudo mount.cifs //192.168.1.254/share /mnt -ouser=route_account,vers=2.0
vers=2.0 might not be necessary for you if your router supports more modern
versions of smb or if you are not running a newish kernel that defaults to 3.0
man mount.cifs
The default since v4.13.5 is for the client and server to negotiate the highest
possible version greater than or equal to 2.1. In kernels prior to v4.13, the
default was 1.0. For kernels between v4.13 and v4.13.5 the default is 3.0.

Pre-release FXRuby binary gems for testing
All,
A couple of new build platforms have come into the picture since the
last FXRuby release and I''m trying to make sure they''re supported.
That is to say, I want to be able to provide precompiled binary gems
so that users on those platforms don''t have to build everything from
source. I think I''m there, but I could use your help testing if you

Just to report an update...
After confirming that the same behavior can be reproduced under old
versions of qemu too, there are now patches committed (commit a06818d
and some prior ones, since 6.03-pre3) to the Syslinux 'master' branch
(at least in the git.zyt...
