R for Computational Neuroscience?
Hi all,
I've noticed that many computational neuroscience research groups use
MATLAB. While it's possible that MATLAB may have some features
unavailable in R, I suspect that this may instead simply be a case of
costly tradition, where researchers were taught MATLAB as students and
pay for it as researchers because it's all they know.
I'd like to attempt to break the cycle by

Adding title to colorkey
A recent paper on visualisation (in Neuron, a leading neuroscience
journal) surveyed how well previous articles in this journal labelled their
graphs (e.g. axis labelling and describing their error bars). Of
particular interest is that (only) 40% of plots labelled what their
colorkey was showing (variable and units).
The paper is at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.neuron.2012.05.001

¡Muchas gracias!

R project question (SEM)
Hi there,
I just saw your question on the help list and tough you could help me with
some start-up info....
I just downloaded the R project software to try running SEM analysis and I
also downloaded the SEM package. But it just sits there on the desktop and R
does not know where it is...I can¹t figure out how to organize the
files...When I type ?sem in R it says object sem not found...I can¹t

Plot a line according to a specified equation
Does anyone know how to graph a line according to a specified equation? I'd
like to plot the following hyperbola:
Y=139.35/(1+(0.174*X))
I know there's a way to do this, but I'm having a ridiculous time trying to
remember how.
Thanks!

Broken Links on http://www.r-project.org
I was not sure who I should contact about this, so I am posting this here.
There are a few broken links on the R website.
1) http://www.r-project.org/search.html -> link to the Nabble R Forum. I belive the correct/new URL should be: http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/
2) http://www.r-project.org/other-docs.html -> link to "Auswertung ?kologischer Daten". Not sure if there is a new

remove columns containing all zeros (or other value)
Hello-
I would like to remove the columns of a matrix that contain all zeros.
For example, from
x<-matrix(c(1,5,3,2,1,4,0,0,0), ncol=3,nrow=3)
I would like to remove the third column. However, because this is in a
loop I need a way to first determine which columns are all zeros, and
only then remove them. I.e., I don't know which column of x contains all
zeros until after x is

Trouble installing pwr package
Hi all,
I'm having trouble getting access to the pwr. This is on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx,
64 bit.
I'm installing pwr via packages.install('pwr'), and loading it via
library(pwr), both of which appear successful.
Strangely, I never get access to the pwr object in R.
I tried installing it to /usr/local/lib/R/site-library and
~/R/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-library.
I also tried installing it

OpenSSH 3.2.3p1 won't compile under IRIX 6.5.14
Previously 3.2.2 would not compile under Solaris, then 3.2.3
came out with a bug fix for the problem.
Now 3.2.3 won't compile under IRIX 6.5.14. I've tried using
both gcc 3.0.1 and the IRIX MIPSpro 7.1 compilers. I've been
compiling previous versions of OpenSSH for years using these
same compilers (we haven't updated the MIPSpro compiler for 3
years, and I've been using it on

Binary file input to R
I suspect that the recent queries about reading database files into R
implicitely answered my question here, but I'll ask anyway.
Are there any native binary file read routines in R?
I need to a binary data file consisting of 2 byte records, strip off the
upper 6 bits (using a logical AND, leaving a ten bit word), and then write
the ten bit number in text form for R.
Assuming that R

Has the add parameter of plot commands been deprecated?
R for OS X, version 2.0.1
Has the add parameter of plot commands been deprecated? It no longer
occurs in the help listing for plot, and doesn't work, either. If it
has been deprecated, what is the replacement? That is, how does one
overlay an existing plot?

finding ncp for t distribution
Dear R-users,
I am wondering whether R implements a function returning the non central
parameter of a t distribution (equivalent of the TnoncT function from
SAS), given /x/ a value from a t distribution, /df /the degrees of
freedom and /p/ the probability of x under this distribution.
Thanks a lot,

how does sem determine the start value? Is there a default?
