Clean way to monitor status of 'sshd' remotely?
I am trying to come up with a "clean" way to check if a machine
is running 'sshd' so it can be included in a NetSaint config.
Currently, there is a NetSaint plugin called "check_ssh", but
it simply connects to port 22, looks for the SSH version response
from the daemon, and then disconnects. This results in the
syslog file where "auth" messages are sent in filling up with
messages like:

How can I politely disconnect? Was: Clean way to monitor status of 'sshd' remotely?
...g the same issue "Eddy Geez" posted about in October, 2001 - I'm
looking to figure out how to politely disconnect from openssh's sshd, such
that it will either not log the connection at all or will at least not log
it at fatal level. I monitor the sshd daemon on all my hosts with
Netsaint's check_ssh plugin every five minutes, so there are a *lot* of
these log messages piling up. It would be very nice to be able to configure
sshd to ignore connections from a specific ip address/user combo, or to have
it log these connections at info level instead, but barring those options

astping crashes asterisk manager module
hi
Just installed astping in Nagios (former netsaint), and it works fine - for
some time. After several hours, the Asterisk manager module just stopped
responding, and I had to restart to make it work
Any idea what might cause this?
Sorry - I don't have the log now. Is it possible to have asterisk log console
output somewhere?

Samba 2.2.1a and named pipes
Can Samba write to named pipes ? I am using Netsaint/Nagios for system
monitoring and the command file to write system commands to is implemented
as a named pipe. I can write normal files to the directory but whenever I
try and write to the pipe I get access denied.
Thanks.

Thanks Tom. Development doldrums in another open source project
I, too, want to thank Tom for such a great software package and all the
support he has always given.
I was just reading a Slashdot interview with the Nagios/NetSaint author
Ethan Galstad. The whole article is interesting and I bet the questions
and answers would be similar for Shorewall:

Problem: Copying large amount of files to SAMBA Server. W2KError "file in use" for exe files
...experience Samba deals very well with seriously high loads even on reasonably modest hardware. I have a dual PIII 600 with 2GB RAM being constantly wacked by around 800 concurrent connections. Performance is excelent considering the load. Oh and there's an Apache, QMail with virus scanning, NetSaint etc etc

Administrative suggestions
Hi there,
mostly based upon list postings I compiled a couple of administrative
suggestions on the Wiki page below. I'd be glad to have this reviewed and
