netlogin scripts
running debian 3.1 "sarge" ppc and samba 3.08 I want to have my win98se computer users to have their shares automatically mapped. 1. I have read that I would use a netlogin directory and put scripts in there? 2. Does anyone know if samba has to be set up a special way ADS, wins, etc... to use the netlogin directory and it's scripts? "this server is the only smb server technology I am using" 3. Does anyone have a good example of a "netlogin"...

Netlogin Service
...ken over a network that has a Windows NT 4 server and a Gentoo Linux server and I need to add a user. The Linux server is the PDC. I've gone through everything on both machines and think I've got it set up correctly but when I try to login from a W2K workstation, it reports that "the Netlogin service is not running on this machine". But the previous user logs in to the network just fine. And I can't set up a local user account that authenticates to the server - depending on how I go at it it seems that the machine can see the domain but can't do anything about it. Any th...

login scripts not being run at session startup
...a final group, sometimes it runs, sometimes it doesn't. There aren't any real differences in the LDAP entry for the account. The relevant line in smb.confis: logon script = \\ns1\netlogon\login\%U <file://\\ns1\netlogon\login\%U> In all cases, it is possible to go manually to \\pdc\netlogin\login<file://\\pdc\netlogin\login>directory, and double-click on the script and it runs correctly, so its not a permisssions problem. At log level 3, I don't see any glaring errors in the log file of the client machine. Nor do I see anything out of the ordinary in smbd.log. Can anyone g...

Problems with Default user profiles.
All, I currently have a problem where the default user profile is not being picked up - Windows simply ingores it and creates one based on local settings. I understand samba supports default user profiles, and one can be put into the profiles share like this: /export/profiles/Default User/ This directory contains a copy of a working profile from a proper user. The relevant smb.conf sections

Domain logins
...re we are keeping the local network data. The two samba servers are used for intranet staging servers. Currently the users are logging into one NT 3.51 workstation that I'm treating as a server, as it has several shares set up that the rest of the NT workstation users use. Can I use the 'netlogin', I believe its called, feature to enable easier user-level authentication? Thanks for any ideas, Dave Wreski

Using samba-python to query AD? Status of API?
.../scripting/bin like 'rpcclient' for instance (which doesn't really work for me due to either not being able to import some modules OR missing DEBUGLEVEL_CLASS if I muck with my PYTHONPATH). I see that samba-python includes SOs of various pertinent libraries (like srvsvc.so, winbind.so, netlogin.so, samr.so etc.). Is there any documentation at all on any of this stuff? Or are all of these APIs really for internal consumption only? -aps

Otherwise you will stop at the "No logon servers available" problem. To co...

Netlogon share and locking
Rob, I hope you have referred to the example smb.conf file. We really cut our teeth on some of the example config settings. It is IMPERATIVE that nothing in the NETLOGON share should become locked - this breaks the logon process very badly! Some Win95 clients will always hang on logon if any files end up being locked in the netlogon share. For the record, here is an extract from

file copy and access problem
...blem shows up when a person wishes to copy a number of files over to the publicly available directory. If one or two files is copied at a time it takes quite a while to complete the process. If they are copying a lot of files, a few will get copied and then an error will show up stating that the netlogin server cannot be found. If a file does get copied over, accessing that file in a word processor or other program is very difficult and can have very long delays in the files access. I have level2 oplocking turned on and I've read through the speed.txt file but I am quite baffled by why it isn...
