- Advice on NetFinity 5000 series
I have an opportunity to pick up a couple of NetFinity 5500's 4 way Xeon
550's w/ 2 gig RAM for very little $$$
I have seen this:
http://www.mail-archive.com/asterisk-dev@lists.digium.com/msg00719.html
In it, there is a passing remark to the Digium cards having problems with
NetFinity's. Can anyone here comment on whether this is stil...

"Succes" report for TDM400 and IBM Netfinity 5600
Hello!
I just wanted to tell everyone that I have successfully used a TDM400 with
an IBM Netfinity 5600 server. I used PCI Slot 3 (the first hot-swap PCI
slot). I had a ServeRAID 3L controller in slot 1as well, which managed
the server's array. Other than that, there was nothing extra installed.
2x667MHz PIII, 1GB RAM, 4 x 18GB hot-swap SCSI drives.
The only problems I had were Ou...

Boot/init problem with IBM Netfinity 4500
I hope the CentOS people don't mind me cross-posting for their input.
I've just done a clean, text-mode minimal WBEL4 install on an IBM
Netfinity 4500, essentially the same hardware as an xSeries 340.
The install went fine but now the box will boot, run through the
initrd init sequence, perform its switchroot then hang here...
SELinux: Initializing.
SELinux: Starting in permissive mode
I don't think it's an SELinux issue though...

Quick Question
Apologies if there is a cleanly written and searchable FAQ that I could be
directed to. I have no problem to RTFM if I can find the FM...
Does Asterisk currently operate under RH9? I have IBM Netfinity 4000R
servers that do not support X windows under RH8.x and I prefer not to go
back to RH7.3...
BTW, where would I find a useful FM?

How to know it's i586?
I plan to install CentOS 4.3 on some older IBM Netfinity which have
Pentium III chips. I see that there is now a i586 pxeboot image for 4.3, I
think that's new. Can I use that for Pentium III?

Something every TDMP user should know

work fine, you just have to set it up right. Ask me how.)
I put the setpci statements in /etc/rc.d/rc.local before my modprobes to the
Digium hardware and Asterisk startup.
I'm using a 4-way Netfinity FC2 * 1.0 stable
I dunno, maybe the community is being too hard on Digium about the design of
the card. I can understand their perpective, it's brutal to make a card that
has to have such tight tolerances and make it work acceptably on the huge
variation in white box hardware (or black box...

IBM buying RedHat
...t those IBM systems were priced in a
different range from what we were interested in. And I know that I didn't
find any price listed online when looking for POWER servers from IBM last
time - and I know what that means :-)
If they came back now with something like their deprecated X86 servers
(Netfinity, System x) but on POWER, that could be interesting.

The old IBM Netfinity Servers had ServeRaid controllers and they were from
IBM and had nothing to do with LSI.
IIRC I've monitored those RAIDs with the ipssend utility back in the last
millennium (really, 1999) :-)

Optimal Hardware
...truct to email a fax or me
running a MySql query happen on the other 3 CPU's and leave CPU1 bound to
Asterisk alone.
CPU use is so low because codecs on the LAN are native to the PSTN, so
there's no transcoding. This is the key.
As to why I would use such an old machine? Hey, it's a NetFinity, it'll
never die and has redundancy up the wazoo. Also, two independent PCI busses
with good throughput. I don't have to worry much about PCI bus contention,
since the TDM cards are by themselves on their own bus. NetFinity's are $400
on Ebay, so I've bought a couple more as spar...

OT: IAXModem in inittab causes modem to be unres ponsive, running from console it's OK
..., the modem is extremely slow to respond and only actually does
anything about half the time, the rest of the time the HylaFax client says:
"Initializing server" and it stays there forever. If it does send a fax, the
fax is usually corrupt. faxguy, can you comment? Running FC2 latest, SMP
NetFinity, Asterisk 1.0.9 as non-root, latest SpanDSP for -users, not -dev
(Pre21?) all on same box. The 2 virtual modems are set up to a non-obvious
port (not 4569) to avoid port conflict.

Looking for new hardware
Hi.
I gave up with the IBM NetFinity, so I'm going to buy new hardware. I'm
going to install:
1-)One X100P (1 FXO module)
2-)One TDM03B (3 FXO modules)
I'll have the 4 FXO channels busy almost all the time, and I would like
quality to be as good as possible without going to the high-level
hardware. I would like to...

Is this ext3 or bad drive sectors problem?
Hello LINUX GURUS,
I am fairly new to LINUX OS, so pardon my ignorance about LINUX OS.
I have installed LINUX 7.2 on IBM netfinity 4000R server. OS works fine for few days and start giving me this error message all of a sudden:

"kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=4944861, sector=4736016"

Best procedure for migration?
...example and in Samba HowTo has come up
empty. There is a chapter in Howto on migrating from 2.2.8, but
it mostly describes the changes in 3 from 2. Nothing on best
practices on how to do it.
I have two servers running samba 2.2.8a. on FreeBSD 4.5 I have
two new (new to me anyway... 2nd hand netfinity boxes) running
FreeBSD 6.1 along with a fresh install from packages of samba
3.0.21b.
Now I have a task that I think is akin to changing the spark
plugs without turning off the engine.
Q1. Has anyone produced a guide on how to migrate samba
gracefully to another machine?
Q2. Is it a bad...

IBM x306 - some progress
Hi,
I asked yesterday about a problem with x306 and IRQ sharing, didnt get
much info, now, i was playing with lspci, and see something strange,
lspci -v shows me the TDM400P card is on IRQ 7, and the SCSI card is
also on IRQ 7,
lspci -bv (from the man - b - shows "bus-centric view, as seen by the
BUS and not by the kernel) shows me the TDM400P is on IRQ 5, why does
the kernel puts it on

I have installed samba 3.0.0 on a RedHat 9.0 box. I have used the rpm binary i got from Canada mirror. The server is a dual Pentium II 400 IBM NetFinity 5000. Installation was easy. Testparm outputs:

Loaded services file OK.

ruby rails performance
Hi-
We just finished our app and I tested for performance with httperf. Our
setup is browser -> apache2.2-> mod_poxy balancer-> mongrel cluster -> 3
mongrel servers.
I have noticed that the total request per second is is about 7.5. When I
increase the no of mongrel to 5, it inches up to 8 req/s.
My question is how bad or good this number is? We are on a old dell 2400
machine

Um, yep. The AS/400/system 1/whatever is not a small system. It's what
used to be called a mid-frame, not a micro. It's money.
Back around '94, I worked at a small software house that had it's own

Nevertheless, they are just rackmount servers, much like the kinds of
x86-64 servers you can buy from Dell, Lenovo, HPE, Tyan, Gigabyte, etc.
Better CPUs and buses but otherwise quite similar.

Haven't the IBM x86 servers gone to Lenovo now?
As far as I can see, IBM Power Systems *are* in effect what you are
looking for, i.e. a Power-based server to run Linux (or AIX or IBM i if
you prefer) -- well, that's how IBM would see...
