user-space heartbeat ptaches from suse
Hi everyone. Does anyone know why the user-space heartbeat (linux-ha) patches from SuSE / Novell are not commited to the mainline ocfs2 source tree? Or are they? Is there an easy way (which does not break the distros package management) to apply these? Thanks, Christian

ZFS versus VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU
Hello experts, We have a large implementation of Symantec Netbackup 6.0 with disk staging. Today, the customer is using VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU (disk staging). The customer would like to know if it is best to use ZFS or VxFS as file system inside Netbackup disk staging in order to get the best performance possible. Could you provide some information regarding this

How to get first level folder names with rsync commands?
Dear List, I set up a NetBackup destination on my server. And I backup test1 to NetBackup/test1, test2 to NetBackup/test2. Now I wanna know how many folders that have been backuped. It should be 2 folders, with the name of test1 and test2. But I don't know if there is any way to do so? Any advice and help is well appreciated. Thanks. -- Daniel Li

zfs and backup applications
Hi, I was wondering if there have been any conversations with backup vendors like Veritas or EMC regarding better integration with ZFS. While I understand they can use the "native" mode of reading files from the filesystem, it would be great if there were agents that had options like making a snapshot and storing a "zfs backup" datastream that could be used for zfs restore.

using running - should it always restart?
Hi, I am fairly new to using puppet, but have it setup on 25 machines. Just doing some basic configuration management. Recently I decided to try working with updating some services config files and used the ensure => running tags. My question is simple - if the source file does NOT change and I use a subscribe, why does the system keep restarting the daemon every time puppet runs? A simple

Customer questions
A few questions: 1. How does ZFS compare to Luster? 2. Is ZFS compatible with Veritas Netbackup Suite? 3. Does ZFS support bare metal restore (BMR)? Pointers welcome!! Networker & Dedup @ ZFS
Hi, We are considering using a ZFS based storage as a staging disk for Networker. We''re aiming at providing enough storage to be able to keep 3 months worth of backups on disk, before it''s moved to tape. To provide storage for 3 months of backups, we want to utilize the dedup functionality in ZFS. I''ve searched around for these topics and found no success stories,

Rsync 2.5.5 hangs for no apparent reason
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this email. I'm using rsync to make a copy of my Netbackup Catalogs to an offsite server for DRP. I have narrowed the problem down to a few sub-directories that contains 16 directories each and in each directory there are about 37 files. None of the files are larger than 300MB. In fact, most of them are around 1K-5MB. The problem is, rsync

Link-dest thinks file is newly created, but it isn't
Hi: I've been using rsync for a couple years now. Unfortunately, I've made some changes on both ends, so it's unclear what could be the culprit. I make extensive use of --link-dest to provide a cheap "Time Machine"-like backup for a Windows machine. Looking for server recommendations
We're going to replace an older Solaris7/Netbackup/TapeRobot server with a new Centos box using backup-to-disk-to-tape (probably using Arkeia). The specs are up in the air, but generally: - CentOS/RHEL friendly (3Ware SATA? SCSI?) - 2U/3U/4U-ish form factor - hotswap RAID5 - dual PS, hotswap a plus - USB2.0 port(s) (*) To give you an idea of where I'm starting to look, take a gander at
