ext3 + raid, is resize2fs neccessary?
...is resizing
the filesystem after doing a mkraid command. This howto lacks any ext3
documentation. Some questions I have are:
1. Should I convert back to ext2 on all my filesystems before I do a mkraid?
2. If I leave the system at ext3, will the mkraid conflict with the journal?
Is resize2fs even neccessary now-a-days?
3. If so, in the future, can ext3 compensate for a potential raid situation
(reserving that meta-block) so that e2fsck and resize2fs won't be
neccessary.
Basically, Step 11 scares the hell out of me which is why I haven't done
this on a live system.

[PATCH] ia64/xen: add a neccessary header file to copmle include/xen/interface/xen.h
Create include/asm-ia64/pvclock-abi.h to compile which includes
include/asm-x86/pvclock-abi.h because ia64/xen uses same struture.
Hopefully include/asm-x86/pvclock-abi.h would be moved to somewhere
more generic.

winbind / nss_winbind with Solaris with large amout of uses/groups
hi all !
I have compiled Samba 2.2.2 for Solaris 7 ( Solaris 8 also ) but found out
that the "nss_winbind" support
is available in source-code, but not after compilation.
The neccessary entries in the Makefile after "configre" are missing !!
Why ?
I have got it to run and it works fine with a small amout of groups.
But deploying this samba/winbind version to a Windows network with more than
3000 user and
more than 200 groups gives following result:

large smb.conf file
...y much bring the system to a halt. The system is WAY oversized. 99.999% of the day samba runs fine. We _THINK_ we've narrowed down the times when the smbd processes go crazy to a time when we're updating the smb.conf file. Does this sound reasonable? Is there a better way to create the neccessary shares?
Thanks

Problem with Perl bindings (enquire)
...base but when i duplicate the code from
Search::Xapian::Database i get the following error:
Search::Xapian::Enquire::new() -- databases is not a

This is pretty disappointing since fetching a document by index-term
is rather neccessary during indexing -- or how should one fetch a document
to replace it during re-indexing without enquires to the database?

Inconsistency with the option for defining the destination port
Why is there an inconsistency with the option for the destionation port.
ssh -p <port> ...
scp -P <port> ...
sftp -P <port> ...
For scp it is neccessary to be "-P" ( Quote: " Note that this option is
written with a capital 'P', because $B!](Bp is already reserved for preserving
the times and modes of the file in rcp(1)." ).
Also sftp uses already "-P", but ssh, still only supports/uses the small
case. For Consi...

Selective and efficient logging of auth/connection information
...aim is to circumvent
expensive and delayed mechanisms like tail()ing syslog to get to the
required info and be able to take appropriate action (like blocking
a host via the firewall) as quick as possible.
So I thought about implementing a simple daemon that listens on a
Unix Fifo and gets fed the neccessary parts from opensshd in a concise
single-line format. The reason for using a Fifo is simply speed, but
I'm not hundred percent sure yet whether a local socket might be a
better approach (have to play the different locking/blocking/timing
scenarios through my head). Digging through the sources I...

Creating an R package file
Dear R community,
I would like to create my own R package files, but I find some problemm for R versions >1.9.
When in previous versions of R I could write a simple text file, to have a functioning file package, now I found that is neccessary to implement also binary copies of the file. I cannot understand, reading from R manuals, how it is the correct procedure to create these binary files.
Is there anybody that can help me on this issue?
Many thanks,

P.S.: 1.8.1.1 still contains some bugs which have been fixed in 1.8.3.
Described setup is for test purpose only, but the procedure shall be

Ext3 and undeletion - A way how it could work.
Hello.
After reading some mails from mailing list archives and other sources,
ext3 seems to having troubles in deleting files w/o destroying the data
neccessary to undelete them. Ok, I know what journaling means, and in any
way, the ext3 fs driver needs to keep track of which blocks have actually
been marked as being free. But now my question: Who say, that this
information must be stored in the original inode data? The answer is: Is
isn't neccessa...

After a little bit of fiddling i've got this running. Here is what's
neccessary in case someone wanna try this too.
qemu-guest.-agent has to run with the option: "-F /etc/qemu/fsfreeze-hook".
This file contains as pointed out by Eric:

Then you need to have a directory called /etc/qemu...

Auth process sometimes stop responding after upgrade
...ded the poolmon script, as Sami suggested.
It seems that the upgrade has scared the issue away, because it no longer occurred.
Maybe the problem is related to the way the old poolmon talked to the director daemon?
I'm not very inclined to downgrade poolmon to catch a traceback, but can do if neccessary.

This is mostly for Richard, but others may have useful thoughts too.
I just took a look at the debian stuff. It's generally looking good
(though I haven't actually tried to build the debs). A few comments
