Unable to run Pass 11
Hi All, I am new to both Linux and Wine. I am running Mint 12. For work I use Stata, R, and PASS 11. I am able to install Stata and R as Linux apps. But PASS 11 is Windows only. I installed it using Wine and it appears to be installed. When I got to .wine/drive_c/Program Files/NCSS/PASS 11...I can see that all the files are there and when I either double click on PASS11.exe or use the terminal I am not able to run the program. In the terminal I get this: ------------------------------------------------------------ sabby at sabby-Qosmio-X505 ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/...

How to superimpose a histogram and density plot
NCSS has a nice plot of the histogram and density plot superimposed. The S-PLUS 4 Guide to Statistics on page 45 suggests the following code for a general purpose density plot for a vector named data iqd <- summary(data)[5]-summary(data)[2] plot(density(data,width=2*iqd),xlab="x",ylab=&quo...

another aov question: unbalanced multiple responses
...I reckoned that aov (and underneath, lm) might handle this as it should, since the subjects are idendified, when I do > aov( y~Modality*size + Error(Snr/(Modality*size)) ) I indeed get a result without any warning. Remembering a remark on unbalanced designs in aov, I ran the same (?..) test in NCSS. It too gives results without any warnings or errors, but they're not exactly the same. The DF, SumSQ, MeanSq and F values are the same for Snr:size and for Snr:size:Modality, but they are not (except DF) for Snr:Modality and Snr. (On fully balanced data, I did get the same values in both progs...

odd NOTE in R CMD check of data; Rcpp module related
With the current version of the "raster" package (that I maintain), R CMD check on packages "soilDB" and "PopGenReport" have this NOTE: Package: soilDB Check: data for non-ASCII characters New result: NOTE Error in .requirePackage(package) : unable to find required package 'raster' Calls: <Anonymous> ... .findInheritedMethods ->

GUIs
Several people have posted very good thoughts on the issue of making R more "student friendly." My personal summary of these and what's needed, perhaps not just for students, is as follows. Emacs/Xemacs with ESS does part of this but non-everyday users need a simpler editor. No point and click analyses- these instill bad practices and are not replicable. Even for drawing

GUI's for teaching
Dear All, There is no advantage of GUI over CLI, IMO. The real issue is the answer to the questions: "What should I do next?" or "What am I allowed to do here?" A "nice" interface, not necessarily GUI, will offer friendly answers: "I was expecting you to do _this_" or "In this situation you are allowed to do _these things_" You see, it's all

A "rude" question
Dear all, I am beginner using R. I have a question about it. When you use it, since it is written by so many authors, how do you know that the results are trustable?(I don't want to affend anyone, also I trust people). But I think this should be a question. Thanks, Ming
