Samba WINS issues over VPN
...es of evidence:
1. No Wins.dat registration over VPN.
On the WINS server, I can view look at the wins.dat file to see which
machines registered with the wins server. If I connect from an XP
laptop over the VPN, I do not see the machine in wins.dat. (It does get
added to browse.dat.)
2. NBlookup fails over VPN.
Microsoft provides a tool called "nblookup" for doing NetBios name
lookups by querying a name server. You can optionally specify the
WINS server if the client is not configured to use one, or it you want
to query a different WINS server.
e.g nblookup SOMEMACHIN...

I can use smbclient to attach to my own samba shares. I can also attach to
other NT shares as a client and view network lists.
I can resolve netbios names with nblookup (but only my static IP servers;
DHCP workstation clients don't return their ip). But I can't nblookup with
-d (broadcasting--no responses at all; this was working fine earlier under a
previous attempt at installing samba, so it probably isn't an ip/mask
error). And while my samba server...

Browse List propagation under Samba
...P professional. The remote client is not a domain member. All
clients work when directly connected to the Samba server (broadcast),
whether domain members or not.
I run WINS support on Samba which is working. I can see my remote
machine registered under WINS and can query the WINS database with
nblookup from all clients.
DNS is also fine (forward and reverse) from all clients. I can also
manually attach to a share from the routed client with a UNC-Path.
IP connectivity is fine between all machines in the network, windows
connectivity also. It is just the browse list that doesn't work.

Cross-Subnet Browsing Problem
...ba server (ARISTOTLE) is in the 172.16.0.x subnet and my
XP desktop (TIMAEUS) is in 192.168.0.x. There is no NAT or firewall
running in between the subnets. Aristotle acts as a WINS server and is
recognized as such in Timaeus' ipconfig output. Name lookups work fine,
as verified by MS's nblookup tool. Also, I can browse shares on
Aristotle using \\aristotle, so the problem is just that the server
doesn't register for browsing.
I ran a capture using ethereal, and everything in there looks OK. The
desktop boots up and registers its name with WINS on the server. Shortly
thereafter, t...

Windows user unable to change password over VPN with samba 3.6.20
I realize this is not a strictly a samba "problem" but I am hoping that
there is a samba solution.
I have a samba 3.6.20 PDC. I am running WINS. We use an IPSec
client VPN to allow users with Windows 7 laptops to connect to the
office remotely. The windows 7 laptops are joined to the Samba
domain. Password expiration policies are enforced. When you

investigated further. The problem: Clients directly connected to the
subnets of the Samba server get a browse list (network neigborhood),
while clients that access the serveer over a router do not. there are no
broadcasts, Samba is functioning as a WINS server and is working for all
clients (nblookup proves this). I upgraded from 3.0.10 to 3.0.20b-1 but
this made no difference.
I have spent quite some time with Ethereal an notice that all clients
request SRVSVC NetrServerGetInfo request (port 445) and the information
is false in the response from the Samba server :

join domain from different subnet (VPN)
Hello everybody,
we have a problem joining a domain from a remote location.
The remote location is connected via VPN. Everything is working as exspected but joining the samba domain from the remote location does not work.
- Server Samba Version is 3.5.10
- Windows Client is XP SP3
- Joining the domain locally works without problems
- ping does work in both directions
- WINS is running on the
