Boot from USB without C Drive
Dear All
I have a problem with my Compaq EVO n410c laptop.
I want to install Windows (Win98/WinXP) on it.
But this laptop don't have any floppy/cdrom to boot from.
I have try to use My USB Drive to boot, using syslinux.
Here's my step
1. Format the USB Drive using "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool"
2. Install syslinux (syslinux -f F:). F is my USB Drive
3. Using

Mkdiskimage exits with syntax (maybe drive letter problem?)
I have had a problem with mkdiskimage for quite a while. It seems to
always exit with the syntax messages. I'm not really familiar enough
with Perl to figure out exactly what it's checking for there that it
determines is incorrect, but, my guess would have to be that it
doesn't like the letter. Eg, I think the last time it suceeded I was
running it on sda, but, not I'm typically

Trying to figure out why my Cruzer Micro 512"MB" won't boot.
Office Depot ran a deal with a Cruzer Micro 512MB (actually, around
488MiB) for about $20 after a rebate I may not see for months. I saw
the ad yesterday and stopped by pretty well first thing this afternoon
to snatch one up while they were still there since I've been having to
make do with two 256MB drives to hold all the data I neded since one
drive couldn't hold enough (though I must

Syslinux freezes my MP3 player/flashdrive, normal dos boot does not.
I recently got a cheap PenDrive iVO which I'll be the first to admit
is anything but perfect, but, a pretty decent player considering it's
cost is that of the other players with half the memory. One of the
things I was looking forward to was having a great bootable flashdrive
with my favorite linux rescue image and a few other diagnostic/repair
things. Unfortunately, since I tried to put

Loading syslinux native from a USB HDD
Hi there guys!
I want to set up Puppy-Linux to run off a 2GB USB key-drive in native
mode (I.e. not as a virtual machine, which I'm finding runs too slow on
my system, under XP.)
To test it out, I want to run off a 150GB USB HDD. Now this drive is
NTFS formatted and way bigger than the 1GB file structure limit that I
read about in the Syslinux documentation. There's only one

Linux on a USB Drive
Hi,
I saw a post you made on a forum quite some time ago
about booting linux off a USB drive with compatible
bios via ISOlinux. I'm currently trying to do the
same thing and keep running into problems with my
initrd. This is probably caused by the fact that I
don't really know what I'm doing! I was wondering if
you found any useful info on the net you could point
me in the

Can't boot a kernel from usb drive
I have been trying to boot a kernel I compiled. I tried 2 different USB
thumb drives. I tried win32 syslinux 3.31 and 3.36 with no luck. I even
tried another known good kernel for testing purposes. After syslinux
starts I get "Invalid or corrupt kernel image" but I don't think it is
even really trying to run it. The last time I built a kernel about 1-1/2
years ago you could put a

pxelinux menu questions
Hello all,
I have a few questions about the menuing system that I haven't been able
to find in the archives (it would be nice if they were available in a
searchable form other than having to click on a month-by month basis and
read through them - if they are searchable I would love to find a way to
do this but it hasn't jumped out at me).
My first question is : What is menu.c32? I

Felt like saying thanks
I know, this probably isn't the right place for it, but, I was just
finding the nth use for syslinux and thinking yet again just how handy
these tools are and just felt like saying it. Thanks for all your
hard work Mr. Anvin in providing not just a massively useful tool
that's open to all to use for free, but, even supporting this tool so
well.

TFTP server gets stuck for me. But not all of the time?
I finally got around to trying to learn how to setup and configure a
PXE server on a spare system I've been using as a router/download
server. It took me forever, but I finally got everything more or less
together and in a working form. But it seems I'm having an unusual
problem outside of all this.
I never really got a TFTP server fully working. After several failed
attempts on

Any way to boot a CD if no BIOS support & CD-ROM is not 100% standard?
I originally asked in a hardware/software forum, but, got basically no
results. It occured to me that if anyone would know, it would be you
people. What I'm wanting to do is set up a rescue disc for a really
old laptop. It needs to boot up a linux based CD, hopefully with
minimal to no working stuff on the harddrive (I plan to put a floppy
image to be written to a disk when needed to do the

EXTLinux freezing up
I just now finally got around to redoing my grandmother's harddrive --
moving everything from a NTFS partition to FAT32 so I could set up
rescue discs, be able to make repairs, and other such things that
would then be able to safely write data to her primary partition. My
resulting setup was a three partition drive with the first partition
being a ~256MB EXT2 partition for boot files, the

Minor idea - "Press any key to boot within 5 second" style of thing...
I like how some cds, such as the windows installer discs will skip
booting from the disc if you accidentally left the drive because they
require you to hit a key to make them actually boot from the disc.
I've kind of tried to emulate this behavior using chain.c32, but, it
requires me to specify which harddrive, and I'd rather see an
independant setup. I've tried localboot -1, but, it

"Cannot execute binary file" with several distros
Lately I've been finding that most versions of Syslinux no longer work
in the various linux distros I use them in (primarily Mandriva 2006
and Finnix.) When I try to run binaries such as the extlinux it
produces the error "bash: ./extlinux/extlinux: cannot execute binary
file" which it says for each of the major binaries. As nearly as I
can tell, everything but the scripts in fact.

Does advanced menu actually support ontimeout?
I've finally gotten around to playing with the advanced menu, though
the complex example is definitely still beyond me. I'm trying to
figure out a few basics from it, such as the tab key for line editing
(don't know what I've done wrong here since it seems like I copied
that part right) and the timeout. It looks to me like the only
ontimeout implemented so far is an option to not

Unable to boot my USB flash drive, even with USB-ZIP trick...
I've been using a USB flash drive for quite a while now, and in my
previous system it worked great, but, I find with my new motherboard
now that I have upgraded I can't boot it. So I decided to try the
trick mentioned in the README.usbkey file where you make a ZIP drive
like image on the flash drive and set the BIOS to boot a USB ZIP drive
instead. Unfortunately, it still doesn't

Any way to boot Windows NT (specifically Win2K) directly?
I decided to install Win2K on my "retrogaming/htpc" system to take
advantage of the dual processors in the thing when I'm multitasking a
lot, but, it's kind of annoying having to use first one bootloader to
chainload my Windows 98 partition, then, via NTLDR, selection Windows
2000 to get to Win2k. I tried using the recovery console to try to
force it to write a boot sector to
