Linux backup to Windows hard drive and restore using rsync?
.... This will not break the existing OS symbolic links because there are not on the Windows backup. I'm aware that the services run levels /etc/rc#.d/ will not be restore properly because those symbolic link will not be backup in the 1st place. Any other drawback? File Locking under Windows - a solution ?
We are currently using Rsync (with cygwin) to propagate static files from a preview server (Windows) to our live servers (Windows) on demand. Unfortunately, because the live servers are *live*, inevitably some of the files we mean to update are in use and therefore locked by the windows filesystem. Since they are locked, they are not updated, and our servers get out of synch. Does anyone know

Does rsync even get started on the remote system? That would be the first thing to investigate. If it is getting run, does the remote process crash or die? If you are connecting with a daemon proces...

Pam Authentication
Hello, First, i'd like to thank all of you who are involved in the rsync project. You do it great. 2nd, i'd like to share with you a problem, which i think could be solved pretty easily. I got to set a backup solution. I'm using nasbackup ( nasbackup.com ). Nasbackup is rsync based ( via cygwin ). I have a file server, which already have Samba + LDAP, up & running. I'd like to map rsyncd authentication with LDAP. But as you know, there's no build-in solution in rsync. So, regarding the most basic authentication scheme o...

why not a gui for rsync
I'm using rsync and I'm very glad, but, in some case, i'm not so happy. Some people are backing up the data with rsync but they have a lot of files, more than 100000 and 20 Gb of data. We are using batch files and the task scheduling system of windows. It is difficult to see if the backup is well done, sometimes, they are error. We try to make some gui, one in java, an other in c++

Backup Exchange mailboxes using rsync
Hi all, Has anyone got any advice on the best way to backup Exchange mailboxes (Exchange 5.5) running on a Windows 2000 server? We already use rsync on a number of other Windows boxes for general file backup. I've read that even if you get backups of the Exchange mailbox files, then it's really tricky to get the mailboxes back into Exchange if the server dies. Anyone got any tips on

Problem with rsync-cygwin between two WindowsXP machines
I hope this problem hasn't been posted before, I cannot find a way to search the archives... I use rsync successfully between several Suse 9.1 machines at my work - never with any problem(s). I had to move my email from an obscure mail client (that saves each message as a separate file) to Mozilla mail (for security purposes). So, my "old" program that I used to sync my mail

Growing file
Hello, What would be the expected behaviour of rsync, synchronizing a file that is changing in size. If I have a file ( say 100G ) that is being gzipped, and I start an rsync of that file system to a remote location, would rsync just send the data of that gzip file that exists on disk at that point in time, or would it keep looping seeing that the file is changing. Thanks, Sameer
