NMBD Not Starting
I moved an entire RH 6.2 server from one CPU to a new one using a tape backup/restore. Everything from the old server is working on the new server, but when SysV starts up smb, the nmbd daemon (2.0.6) exits with an error: create_subnets: No local interfaces! eth0 has already started according to the logs and console. Any ideas? Thanks. ______________________ Greg Kelley, IT Director SSA, EAA,

Unwanted browse lists
Michel, One approach that hasn't been suggested is to block access to the netbios nameservice port on the samba host with a firewalling rule. That way the other computers on the subnet can't register themselves with nmbd. Suppose that your internal network is all within the 192.168.15.0/24 network. Each Windows workstation will automatically announce itself with a udp packet broadcas...

ls and getfacl hanging with nt authentication
...0.2a running on Solaris 8 compiled with winbind and authenticating against an NT domain. every time I run a "ls -l" or "getfacl" the command line hangs as it's tries to pull down all the user/group details from the domain. I heard this may have something to do with nscd (nameservice cache daemon?) which is running on the solaris machine. Any thoughts appreciated! Steve

Vanishing Permissions on Shares
I am trying to move our network from windows NT-2k to Samba /Linux. So far everything is great but there is one main obstacle; when I apply permissions to a Samba share via my W2K workstation, the permissions instantly disappear. This happens regardless of the owner / creator of file or the user / group permission I attempt to add. I have run 2.2.7, 2.2.8, and now 3.0 beta3. All three behave

OpenSSH 4.0p1 segfaults on keyboard-interactive login
Hi folks, I've compiled the new OpenSSH 4.0p1 on my Linux box running Fedora Core 2 (kernel 2.6.10) the same way as I did with 3.9p1 and all previous versions. Key-based login works fine, but if I login from a host that require me to enter my login password (keyboard-interactive), then the sshd child process segfaults. Don't know if this is specific to my system or to Linux in general.

Creating users "on - the - fly"
Hi all. I have a situation that I wonder someone may have run into - or has a direction I should dig / develop in. Let's say I have a system with 1M "users". Their public keys are stored in a database, and I can access them via a web call. I have a few servers which should allow those users access. Some constraints to make it non-crazy. The users can only reverse tunnel. They

User nobody logging in to shares instead of domain us er
I am assuming that you have guest ok = yes, and that guest is the nobody account. It sounds like your name lookups are not searching winbind, do you have winbind in your nsswitch.conf file for password and group? Have you restarted your nameservice lookups (automatic on solaris, nsadmin restart on Irix, don't know about other platforms but a reboot should certainly take care of it if you don't have a platform-specific command to do this. Also, you are using "+" as a winbindseparator ... Are you also using NIS? If so, yo...
