Invalid snum errors (fwd)
Ok, I'm a dumb-ass today. I failed to see the "available = no" in the service entry. Sorry for wasting your time. What's an oplock_break?
...98/10/07 10:05:44 oplock_break: client failure in break - shutting down this smbd. --snip -- Is this something to be worried about? What effects does this have on client-side performance? Note that I have set keepalives = 30 in my smb.conf file - could that be the cause? Thanks in advance. Sync browse list between multiple workgroups?
...what's in the opposite workgroup, I get an error saying that the network name cannot be found. Can someone help me out here? Is this documented better somewhere else? (If I can get this mess sorted out I can contribute documentation, if there's a large enough need.) Thanks all. -- Rob Naccarato "I know I'm a lot of feathers, Sys Admin but not much chicken." Problem executing logon script - PLEASE HELP!
...@system create mask=0775 browsable=yes case sensitive = no Again, this problem happens intermtently, not all the time. And not from the same client or user. The same client may work fine for a few logon sessions, then all of a sudden it fails. Thanks in advance. -- Rob Naccarato "I know I'm a lot of feathers, Sys Admin but not much chicken." Netlogon share and locking
Rob, I hope you have referred to the example smb.conf file. We really cut our teeth on some of the example config settings. It is IMPERATIVE that nothing in the NETLOGON share should become locked - this breaks the logon process very badly! Some Win95 clients will always hang on logon if any files end up being locked in the netlogon share. For the record, here is an extract from

Windows 95 logon problems - HELP!
...fortunately, I cannot reproduce the problem at will. It simply comes and goes throughout the day. Yes, that's right. Users can't logon for a number of minutes, say 10 -30, and then it starts working again. Bizarre. Anyone out there with a suggestion or two? Thanks in advance. -- Rob Naccarato "I know I'm a lot of feathers, Sys Admin but not much chicken." Sheridan College -KM Oakville, Ont. Canada

Locks & permissions on shares
...ome interesting behaviour has occured. When user 'rob' opens a file and writes to it, a lock is placed on it (share mode lock). If user 'bob' then opens the file, rob's lock disappears and bob now has the lock. Bob is now free to write to the file. Any ideas? Thanks. Next Release...?
Just wondering when the next release of Samba is coming out with support formultiple WINS servers. If there are patches available to 1.9.18p8 that enable this support now, I'll take it. Win95 login problems (after client crash)
...- on the server, the smbd process related to the first logon is *still* running This problem is reproduceable. I have set the deadtime parameter to 5 minutes, but I don't think it's really taking affect because the client is still using the shares... Anyone have a suggestion here? WINS multi-homed server resolution
...n the server without making an LMHOSTS file on the client. When Samba uses "dns proxy", and dns returns multiple ips for a hostname, does Samba filter these ips at all? If not, does it return them all to the client and let the client sort it all out? Any and all ideas are welcome. smbd chewing cpu on DU 4.0e
...d this be the cause of my cpu woes? BTW, there was an issue a while ago on the list regarding an "infinite" loop problem on DEC Unix when Samba is trying to figure out a user's group membership. Has this been addressed? Are there patches available? Looking forward to 2.0.0... Office2K & file overwriting problems
Using Office2K (Word & Excel) on NTWS 4.0 and samba 3.0.0 on Debian Linux, kernel 2.4.21. 1. Run Excel and create a sheet. Save it to the Samba server. No problem. 2. Close the sheet and open a new one (File->New). 3. Try to save the new sheet over the first one and Excel gives the error: "Cannot save the file. 'H:\test\Book1.xls' is not a valid file name." 4. Performance tips for heavily loaded servers
Does nayone have a collection of performance tips for heavily loaded samba servers? I have a server that routinely has 45-90 connections and just runs really poorly. We've thrown more memory at it w/ some benefit, but not significant. This is on a linux 2.0.35 based machine. Fwd: RE: Group logon Scripts
I have a similar situation and have assigned all users to varying primary groups. It works OK but could be better. I am including an e-mail from the samba list that improves on my login/out scripts. I have not had a chance to try the improvements yet. Good luck.
