Handling InvalidAuthenticityToken from bots
I''m using exception_notifier to get an email when a 500 error occurs in production. Lately I''m seeing a lot of nonsensical POSTs show up that cause an InvalidAuthenticityToken error. All the fields contain random characters. (For instance, "search_title"=>"BHQWTZpjGeb") Is there a way to detect them and not send the email, while still sending the email in

acts_as_solr plugin fate?
Just wanted to see if I was using the latest acts_as_solr plugin, but the URL <http://acts_as_solr.railsfreaks.com/> takes me to a GoDaddy domain parking page. Anyone know what''s happened to railsfreaks, and more particularly this plugin? -- Hassan Schroeder ------------------------ hassan.schroeder-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org twitter: @hassan -- You received this

Curiosity in my production.log: */*
In my production.log, I usually see lines like this: Processing by HomeController#index as HTML But sometimes I see the line like this: Processing by HomeController#index as */* At first I thought perhaps those calls were made by a bot, but after looking at it closer it looks as those they are generated by normal users. I have no idea, first, how that line could have been generated, and

Setting up a rails app in a relative path (using Apache and Passenger)
Hi, This seems like it should be a common problem, but I haven''t been able to google for the right terms, evidently... I''m trying to set up my rails app, not to the base domain name, but to a relative path. That is, the server already hosts an app at the domain, and I want to add a rails app. So, mydomain.com already exists and is a PHP app. I want mydomain.com/railsto point

Script acting differently inside of rake task
I''ve created a rake task that does various things, one of which is calling a script. When I call that script from my Rails.root folder, it works, but it doesn''t work inside my rake task. [This is rails 3] That is, the following line works from bash: lib/daemons/mailer_ctl start However, inside my rake task, this line does not work: puts `lib/daemons/mailer_ctl start` The

Passing a period as part of an id in show action
I am trying to do the following in a RESTful manner: I have a web service that accepts an id to deliver a particular record. Unfortunately, the id that the client will have is not the usual database sequence number. This mostly works, though, and the url looks something like: http://myservice.com/controller/the_id.xml That is handled by the "show" action. Unfortunately, some of

Rails 3.1 Engines: Full vs. Mountable
Hi all, I was hoping someone could please clarify the differences between a full engine and a mountable one. I have noticed the following: ** Full Engine ** - With a full engine, the parent application inherits the routes from the engine. It is not necessary to specify anything in parent_app/ config/routes.rb. Specifying the gem in Gemfile is enough. The engine routes are specified as: #

Memory Leak
I have a small app that is handling large(ish) file uploads, around 150-200Mb, it''s been running for about a year now. I''m running Rails 2.3.10, Thin 1.2.7, and Paperclip 2.3.5 Last week I went through and updated Rails from 2.3.5 to 2.3.10 and started to use the nginx upload module (http://www.grid.net.ru/nginx/ upload.en.html) to handle the uploading of the file, then pass

Reserved column names in Rails 3
I''m attempting to upgrade one of my sites to Rails 3 and I''m getting the following error: field_changed? is defined by ActiveRecord The particular table it is referring to has a column named "field", and I''m assuming that the error message means that I can no longer have a column named "field". First, am I assuming correctly? Two questions: 1) I

Suppressing log line for partials
I have a lot of partials, so I find that my production.log file gets pretty cluttered and large quickly and it makes it more difficult to use. I like most of the messages, I just don''t see a need for taking up a line for each partial that is rendered. The logging is done in action_pack in the log_subscriber file here: class LogSubscriber < ActiveSupport::LogSubscriber def

utf8 characters in cucumber feature file
In my feature file, I have the following line: When I search with <q=+Brontë> using xml This blows up with: incompatible character encodings: UTF-8 and ASCII-8BIT (Encoding::CompatibilityError) Is there a trick to getting non-ascii characters in a .feature file? Current recommended approach to "chat room"-type app?
Hi, I''ve been googling around looking for a good approach to doing live updates of my webpage. I''ve got a fairly extensive application already, using traditional rails, and I''d like to have a page update in real-time, hopefully without having to completely rewrite the app. One of the most promising approaches looks like Faye, but the railscast I saw was from 10 months

Using rack-offline with the asset pipeline (images not cached)
Hi, I''ve been trying to incorporate https://github.com/wycats/rack-offline into my app. I followed the example in the readme that shows how to cache application.css and application.js files and that works. When I go to my browser in production mode, though, and turn off my network connection, then reload the app, the app is reloaded successfully, except for the images. I think I

Production quality Rails 4 chat demo?
Hi Everyone, I''m trying to use Rails 4''s ActionController::Live functionality to do a chat-like interface in my app. I''ve found a number of blog posts, all of which seem to be based on Aaron Patterson''s original one here: http://tenderlovemaking.com/2012/07/30/is-it-live.html Has anyone here successfully gotten this to work well enough for production? csv/Rails 3/ruby 1.9.2p0/mysql encoding problem
I''m having an encoding problem, even though I''m attempting to have all my data always be in utf-8. Here''s the path the data takes: I have a CSV file that I believe is in utf-8, because I''m looking at it in a hex editor. One of the words is: 64 65 62 74 6F 72 E2 80 99 73 which translates to: debtor’s [that is, it contains a smart apostrophe] Now,

Rails 3.2: invalid %-encoding (100%)
I started getting exception notifications recently from the server just about the time I upgraded to Rails 3.2. I don''t know if that is a coincidence or not. Evidently some robot is hitting my site with: mydomain.com?iframe=true&width=100%&height=100% and that is throwing an exception. I have two questions: 1) First, just out of curiosity, who puts
