Suspected GPL violation by Erightsoft "super"
Hi guys, the SUPER codec by Erightsoft http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html contains lots of GPL and LGPL code: mplayer, ffmpeg, x264, musepack, theora, which they admit and give credit for. Still, their product is proprietary, and they insist on it. I tried to get the source through their forum, but they of course won't give it: http://www.erightsoft.net/Supforum.html I'll forward this to the different mailing lists, so you can...

Vorbis bistream definition / separation from ogg
...e frame boundaries, frame size, and frame duration in ms. 3) does vorbis always use a variable number of samples per frame? If so, is there a way to know from every frame how many samples are used? Is there any disadvantage at using a constant number of samples per frame (as in mpeg audio, aac, musepack and so on) ? Thanks, Nico

Vorbis determined to be as good as MPC at 128 kbps!!
I am very happy to announce that the aoTuV tuning of Ogg Vorbis has tied with Musepack at first place in the 128 kbps listening test. It has beat iTunes AAC, Lame MP3, ATRAC3, and WMA standard. :) http://www.rjamorim.com/test/multiformat128/results.html -- ------------------------------------------------- Stephen So PhD Student Signal Processing Laboratory School of Microelect...

high bitrate quality?
Hi all, I used vorbis several years ago because of its freeness and VBR, but after playing ha.org and getting an mp3-capable discman, I switched to APS and API mp3 encoding. Now, I am liking musepack a lot, but the flexibility is more "there" for the vorbis format, including players, tagging comments (lyrics in the comments - killer idea!), etc.... However, I am a bit worried about everything I see on testing/tuning/optimizing for higher bitrate encoding. I am wanting to do loss...

Error on sound files with totem removed
I decided to go ahead and remove totem (don't much care for it anyway), and when I double-click a sound file in nautilus, it runs mplayer to play the file, but I also get an error window (from mplayer) that says "[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy" but it is playing the sound file just fine. I can close the error window and everything

interesting news from afterdawn.com
...9;ll be able to listen to music in the Vorbis format, and has anyone else heard anything? <p>quote: "Ahead Software has launched the Software Developement Kit for Nero Burning ROM and also documentation for the Nero plug-in structure. This means that there might finally be OGG Vorbis or Musepack support available -- at least in theory. The funny thing about this is that OGG Vorbis is direct competitor of the Nero AAC Encoder" hehe- I'll try that once theres ogg support :-) <p>--- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph...

Video online
Hi, I held an introduction to Creative Commons last week. The Theora-encoded video (and slides) are available at www.romal.de . I had some serious problems encoding to theora. Is there a canonical way to convert mov and/or wmv to Theora ? I fiddled around whith ffmpeg2theora, but always got some out-of-sync-problems with audio and video. cu romal

Re: ACM for FLAC.
...t files with MP2/3/PCM audio and uncompressed RGB video in them, and first dshow and JMF based MCF parsers for them. At the same time i am trying to motivate Cyrius to start looking into using UCI codecs from Virtualdub ( as alternative to VfW/ACM ), so that movies with VBR audio codecs like MPC ( musepack ), Lame VBR, Vorbis, etc. can be packed in a suitable container ( preferably MCF, maybe even OGG/OGM ). Of course, we have to wait patiently for Alex Stewart to release UCI/libuci as alphas before we really can start working on that. For FLAC alone MCF could offer some nice features same as for MP...

Ogg compared to MPC and AAC
In researching Ogg Vorbis, I have started to become aware of many other audio formats I never knew about, such as FLAK. Well, today I have become aware of two other formats I hadn't heard of before: MPC and AAC. Can anyone tell me what they think of these formats in comparison to Ogg Vorbis? If anyone considers this Off-Topic, please feel free to email me personally. I'm not trying to
