So I deleted the whole public_html directory. Re moved the files over.
I went back to the default user_dir setup of:
<Directory "/home/*/public_html">
AllowOverride FileInfo AuthConfig Limit Indexes
Options MultiViews Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch IncludesNoExec
Require method GET POST OPTIONS
</Directory>
Restarted httpd and tried again. I get my ~/public_html/index.html to

Agile book apache2.conf: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server.

together.
Here is my Virtual host config:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName depot.yourhost.com
DocumentRoot /home/railsapps/rails_3/depot/public/
<Directory /home/railsapps/rails_3/depot/public>
AllowOverride all

My hosts file in /etc has the 127.0.0.1 depot.yourhost.com
Does anything look amiss here? Thank you in advance.

httpd permissions question
...ke that directory available with httpd. The
user owns all the files and subdirs and the rights on all the files is:
-rw-r--r--
I added this to the bottom of httpd.conf and restarted httpd.
Alias /repomirror /home/user1/YumRepo
<Directory /home/user1/YumRepo>
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
#Allow from 172.16 127.0.0.1
#Deny from all
</Directory>
When I try to access http://servername/repomirror I get a 403 permission denied.
What permissions need to be set?
Can I publish the directory this way?
Thanks,
James

Amiga Samba file format?
...(i.e. at PC GUI drag a Unix file
from Unix share and drop it onto an Amiga share) this copy results in a file that
my httpd on the Amiga can't read (in the case of GIF files; html are OK). It gives
me "illegal file type" errors. If I use diff the file is identical to the original,
and multiview can still read it and view it.
Is Samba creating a file on the Amiga with some subtle differences in the low-level
format of the file that confuses httpd?
Can anyone help please?
Cheers, Chris.
