...ux + Cinelerra for editing uncompressed video (and a few dual G5 macs running Final Cut Pro). Current editing stations are getting a bit long in the tooth so I've been mulling over a mass upgrade. 8-) These cards are interesting to me because they are PCI-X and support 4 SATAII drives per multilane/infiniband connector for a total of 16 drives. Multilane is interesting to me because the editor can use a SFF system (tiny desktop footprint) with 1M multilane cables talking to the pile of disks in an external enclosure stashed out of the way with its own redundant power supply. I was goin...

More info on 3Ware 9550SX from the field (in case anyone else is interested)
From a buddy of mine that has spent a little time with the new cards. This was in response to my email asking about his impressions of them: It just came out in mid-September. There are a couple reasons I'm not thrilled with it: 1) no 8-port multilane version (only 12) 2) the 8-port non-multilane version is a kludge, connector-wise (a row of 3 double-stacked connectors along the edge, for 6 ports, and 2 double-stacked connectors in the middle of the board, of which the first connector in the stack is a dummy) 3) They are only on...

ZFS storage server hardware
...hardware. Because of the compatibility issues, I though I should ask here to see what solutions people have already found. I''m learning as I go here, but as far as I''ve been able to determine, the basic choices for attaching drives seem to be 1) SATA Port multipliers 2) SAS Multilane Enclosures 3) SAS Expanders In option 1, the controller can only talk to one device at a time, in option 2 each miniSAS connector can talk to 4 drives at a time but in option 3 the expander can allow for communication with up to 128 drives. I''m thinking about having ~8-16 drives on ea...

optimizing raid passthrough performance?
i''ve external storage (2 x 1TB drives) attached via a Multilane SATA + RAID card (driver:sata_sil24). my goal is a file server in DomU, serving files from a RAID array of the two drives. my Dom0, fwiw, is OpenSuse 11.1. 3 types of file service will be provided: - large, media files will be served to the LAN - active data files will be served to other Dom...

Port multiplier support in megaraid* module for LSI LOGIC LSI00042 PCI-X SATA II Controller?
...nnections (and may be rack mountable with some customizations -- I need to check further). Because of the area the server and storage will be in, the enclosure doesn't strictly need to be rack mountable. http://www.pc-pitstop.com/sata_enclosures/ Here are some links to esata to sata, sata multilane/sas to four internal sata ports, etc. port converters: http://www.satacables.com/html/sata-pci-brackets.html http://www.cooldrives.com/intoexes4pop.html http://www.lycom.com.tw/ST130.htm

ZFS Appliance as a general-purpose server question
A customer is looking to replace or augment their Sun Thumper with a ZFS appliance like 7320. However, the Thumper was used not only as a protocol storage server (home dirs, files, backups over NFS/CIFS/Rsync), but also as a general-purpose server with unpredictably-big-data programs running directly on it (such as corporate databases, Alfresco for intellectual document storage, etc.) in order to

Recommendation for home NAS external JBOD
Hi, my oi151 based home NAS is approaching a frightening "drive space" level. Right now the data volume is a 4*1TB Raid-Z1, 3 1/2" local disks individually connected to an 8 port LSI 6Gbit controller. So I can either exchange the disks one by one with autoexpand, use 2-4 TB disks and be happy. This was my original approach. However I am totally unclear about the 512b vs 4Kb issue.
