Class redefinition
Hi,
Suppose I want to redefine the Ruby String class in a Rails app. In which
file is it the most suitable to write the redefinition?
Thanks

Rails debugging - a (slightly) better approach?
...Apart from that, I can list the source code, step into and over
method calls and inspect everything.
A problem is that after the section of code to be debugged, I also need
a "stop_debug" statement, which removes the trace func so things speed
up again.
Code is available at:
http://www.muermann.org/ruby/mydebug.rb
To give it a try, drop the file in the lib directory of your app and
start the server with:
Ruby -r lib/mydebug
Then, add start_debug/stop_debug commands to the code to be debugged.
The performance between those calls will still be horrible, but at least
the startup time and t...

MenuEngine
Hi all,
MenuEngine is a small Rails engine that can generate templated
drop-down DHTML menus commonly used for web site navigation. Supports
creation of menus from a YAML file, from code and from pre-configured
HTML. Optionally integrates with UserEngine for authorization.

This is my first attempt to release a Rails plugin, so please let me
know if I got the distribution wrong and you have installation
problems.

How to upload all images in a folder?
Instead of making a form to upload one picture at a time, I''d like to
have the File Column plugin accept a directory, and have each picture be
uploaded and thumbnails created (w/ RMagick).
Has anyone done this?
Anyone have a good idea where to start if I were to do it on my own?
Thanks,
Ben Lisbakken

Conditional extend of active record
Hi list,
I''m trying to figure out the best way to add some functionality to
active record. I have a table of files, and need to write a set of core
functions that do different things depending on the type of file eg:
class file < ActiveRecord::Base
def resize
....does stuff
end
end
the problem is the "....does stuff". For example, if the file is an
image it

Windows build with Visual Studio 2005 - some success
Hi all,
first up, big thanks to Dave for doing the hard work of porting
Lucene. I have come to love Lucene through my Java work and was
extremely pleased to find the Ferret project for Ruby.
Now, I am tinkering with building the C extension using Visual Studio 2005.
So far, I have had some success in getting something built and working
in my Rails app (diffs attached). I am also encountering a

Problems getting WEBrick server up and running (new to ruby)
Hello,
I installed ruby and rails on Monday as I have been hearing great things
about both the ruby language and rails framework.
Installation went smoothly but I am having problems launching a WEBrick
server so see what my newly created rails app is doing!
My ruby/ rails installation:
1) Installed ruby directly by compiling the source code.
2) Working on a windows pc, using cygwin to run /

Creating function name from variables..
I have a situation where I have a number of fields and a rating for the
field. So, in a DRY way, this works fine:
<%= [''abc'', ''def'', ''klm''].each do |e| %>
<tr><td><%= @result[e] %></td>
<td> <%= @result[e+''rating''] %></td>
</tr>
<% end %>

Where to store filesystem path?
Hello,
My app needs to know where to store files but the path is different for
dev and production. What is the best way to do it?
- something like $path = ''/home/myrailsapp/public/files/'' in
development.rb and $path = ''/home/my_remote_prod_sapp/public/files/'' in
production.rb?
- do a test to check the env and add the path in application.rb?

paginate, search, sort with ajax problem
hello I hope somebody can help me figure this out.
found this great tutorial at http://dev.nozav.org/rails_ajax_table.html.
got it working except for one thing.
I can''t seem to make the pagination work. The link_to_remote defined in
the helper is pointing to the wrong url.
I have set up things like so:

apps/admin/project.

Overwrite form helper methods and call old ones in new ones?
Hi all
All my forms should look the same, so I think always putting the right
div etc. tags around them is a violation of the DRY principle.
Until now my forms look like that:
<div class="text_field">
<label for="news_item_subject">Subject:</label> <%= text_field
"news_item", "subject" %>
</div>
Now I want the default

Q on AJAX with respect to DRY
I have a shopping cart function, and I''d like to set it up to update the
cart with AJAX. My AJAX call will return a view that displays the cart
items.
My question is with regards to keeping things DRY. When the user goes to
"view cart", that page needs to display the cart, then the cart display
needs to update with AJAX calls when items are added from that page. It

Tutorial for Queries

performing queries with Rails. I do have AWDWR and have read the
section on ''find'' but I''m looking for something that goes into more
detail on how to perform queries across tables.
Abstracted from my current application, this is an example:

n-to-m relationships in Forms
Hi,
I can''t understand the RoR-API concerning certain form helpers. Can you
maybe help me?
I have a model, Film, with a habtm-relationship to the model Language.
Now if I want to have a form for editing/creating a Film, I''d like to
have checkboxes for each Language with those checked that are associated
with the Film in question.
Is there an "easy" way to do this
