4. Guidance for MUAs
By using SRV records as above, MUAs need initially only to prompt the
user for their email address [RFC5322]. The "local-part" and
"domain" portions are then extracted from the email address by the
MUA. The MUA uses the "domain" portion as the servic...

Question about the pop3 feature "leave messages on server for a certain period of time"
Hi all
I am missing something on the the pop3 "leave messages" rationale.
Although the UIDL feature solves for the MUA the problem "whch mails
should be downloaded",
how the duration that these mails should be kept on server, say 10 days
for one MUA and 20 days for another MUA for the same account,
is resolved on the server?
thanks in advance

specific need which are as follows:-

in server's IMAP folder which is Sent Mail instead of local Sent
folder.
2. Whenever user configures account in MUA, MUA automatically

Creating "special" folders?
Is there anyway to make dovecot create Sent, Draft, etc folder automatically? Or is this the job for a MUA?

"important" flag
I'm wondering what I'd need to do to get the "important" flag set on an
incoming message according to a pre-specified header.
I know the problem of this not being a "joined-up" feature in standard
email, but in practice many MUAs set headers like X-priority etc, and IMAP
has an "important" flag that is the obvious mapping.
I'm not really sure where would be the best place to try to put something
like this. Should it be the delivery agent (qmail in my case), the IMAP
server (i.e. Dovecot), or the MUA? To me...

[Dovecot/VirtualUsers/VirtualMailBoxes] No mails into mua
Hi all, I've configured postfix with multiple host and virtual mailboxes
(main.cf is here: http://pastebin.com/798VVxbv).
So I can receive email to vuser at mydomain.tld into
/var/mail/vhosts/mydomain.tld/vuser file. Now I'm configuring dovecot 2.2.13-r1;
this is my dovecot -n and /etc/dovecot/passwddir/mydomain.tld/passwd:

How can I sample from a two-dimensional grid of points
Hi everyone,
My goal is to sample from a two-dimensional grid. Consider the following example of code:
n.grid <- 500
muA.grid <- seq(-4,4, length=n.grid)
muB.grid <- seq(-4,4, length=n.grid)
mu.p <- matrix(NA, nrow=n.grid, ncol=n.grid)
for(i in 1:n.grid){
for(j in 1:n.grid){
mu.p[i,j] <- dnorm(muA.grid[i], 0, 1)*dnorm(muB.grid[j], 0, 0.5)
}
}
mu.p <-

Some of my IMAP Folders vanished in some MUAs
...t only happens in some clients, like Thunderbird
2.x+ or KMail 3.5.x. In others, like Thunderbird < 2, Mutt or my Webmailer
(Horde) they still show up. These folders are still there, i.e. in the
filesystem, and the permissions seem to match those of the other folders
which can be seem in all MUAs.
I don't know if this is even related to dovecot but I think this is where I
should start looking for an solution.
I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc15 from Debian (stable/etch).
It'd be great if anyone was able to help me. Thanks in advance.

imap MUA received
Does anyone know where MUAs like Outlook, Entourage, and Mail.app get
their 'Received' or 'Date Received' information from? It certainly doesn't
appear to correspond with the mail headers, at least in my case, so I'm
guessing it's possibly getting that data from the IMAP server?

antispam plugin and MUA-Junk folders
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hello,
I have a configuration problem, that I ignored till now.
Many MUAs tag SPAM themselves and move SPAM to a junk folder (Thunderbird
uses "Junk").
It is said to not automatically train these mails, but let have an human
revise them.
Currently, I have configured those folders as "trash" folders for
antispam, which means that those messages ar...

IMAP Address book ?
Hello
Does anyone knows if it is possible to manage a personnal address book
with Dovecot and IMAP ?
I mean would it be possible to store it in the IMAP user's space
and not in the MUA address book in order to always retrieve it
even changing on machine / MUA ?
Thanks

Is there a hook for a plugin to do some transient operation on the mail body ...
... when the MUA has issued a FETCH?
?
I am a Dovecot newbie ... so please bear with me if this is obvious. Basically what I am trying to do is process the mail body (in my own specific way) before Dovecot serves it up to the MUA. I want to do it as a transient operation in memory. So think of the scenario as ...
? - the MUA issues a FETCH
? - Dovecot intercepts the FETCH
? - Dovecot internally

identify MUA connecting?
Hello I am using dovecot 1.2.15 on ubuntu.
Is it possible to somehow log the MUA information that is connecting to
Dovecot?
The reason I am wanting to do this is I would like to know if people are
getting their email on personal devices instead of work secured /
standardized phones.

RE: Question on folders
I have read and read the dovecot docs on maildir folders and think that
this is what I want. However, the MUA programs that I use, SylpheedClaws,
Evolution, Mozilla seem to react differently to how I setup the folders.
Is there a good FAQ on this subject somewhere? I think that I want to
setup a virtual domain and am looking for documents.

MUA notifications on new mail in a new folder?
If deliver gets run with a non-root userid like this:
< | deliver -m path/to/NEWmaildir >, I wonder, is a connected IMAP MUA
automatically notified, that the new message has arrived in the new folder?
As I see from some experiments with Thunderbird, it has no problems with
immediate notifications of new mail in previously existing folders, however, it
has problems with the case of new

a question about certificates from letsencrypt
Hello!
Certificates from letsencrypt are renewed every three months.
Does that mean a MUA has to accept the renewed certificates manually
everytime it is renewed?
Sorry if this is OT!

Mail being delivered but MUA showing empty inbox
Dovecot :? 2.0.19 (see config at http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=KMaQ9Ccc)
Postfix :? 2.9.6 (see config at http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=EEeevHfk)
I'm trying to get Dovecot and Postfix working on Ubuntu 12.04LTS but am not having much luck.
The problem is that although mail gets delivered to the correct place, however pointing a MUA of any description at Dovecot just yields a purportedly empty

Future enhancement of imap: sorting?
After solving a problem with a sweet little application I discovered (more
on that below), I wanted to get some feedback about a potential
enhancement for IMAP: standardized, MUA independant, server-side sorting.
Currently, there are two basic solutions for sorting: handle it during
delivery or handle it in the MUA. However, if you handle it in the MUA,
you lose some of the client
