XP can browse samba by IP, but not by name - NMB issues?
...an XP home (falcon) and an XP pro (tatooine) machine, both
behind a rh9 box (hoth) acting as firewall. I've been trying to get
samba set up on the linux box. I think I have it mostly working except
that the XP boxes won't list hoth under "My Network Places - Microsoft
Windows Network - MSHOME",
and I cannot access hoth by name at all from the XP-pro box (by IP, I
can access). So I suppose I have nmb isssues...?

Mshome "deactived" by samba?
Hi,
I'm setting up openSuse samba on my home network (ethernet) so my linux and
the two winXP machines can file share. The linux machine is also where all
the backups for all the other pc's are stored.
My workgroup is MSHOME. When I start up my winxp pc I can see the linux
machine in My Network Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network >
MSHOME However, after a few minutes I get the dreaded "MSHOME is not
accessible." message and the linux machine is only accessible via shares

I am noticing the following entry in my /var/log/message file:

It is in there a lot. Is this something I should try to fix?
Thanks

XP Home and samba
...a server based on Samba 3.0.26b. I tested
it locally with XP Pro running in a vmware VM.
All worked fine, so I shipped it.
Turns out the person using it is running XP Home. Here's her note:
I have restarted the computer and waited ten minutes and still nothing.
All that comes up is the mshome under the Microsoft Windows Network.
So it looks like all she's seeing in her network is her own mshome
workstation and not my samba server.
Is there something particular about XP Home that I / she has to do to
get it to recognize another workgroup?
Should I just talk her through changing...

Samba and VPN
Hi!
I have printers, files shared to all windoze platforms in my group. Now I
want to also access the samba box via a VPN. So configuration:
NT----PPTP---NT/RAS-----Linux 7
Any experience with this type of config? Quick test shows the samba host but
when I try to access it the network path is not found.
Thanks!
