per a bit of googling, it appears this may be a generic 2.6.8 error, as

for what its worth, my local mirror server is actually a Sun ultrasparc
running Solaris 10, with its built in rsync 2.6.8, which appears to be
the same version as is running on the centos mirror servers.

We have had serious issues with rsync reporting "unexpected tag 3 [sender]"
since upgrading to 2.6.8. I applied the patch described in:

... but now we get this error message just uploading (push upload to rsync
server) from 2.6.8-patched to 2.6.8-patched!

rsync client to daemon over ssh tunnel connection issues
Yes this is another connection reset issue but all I am asking is some
pointers on how I can possibly determine what and why this is happening.
Its easy to say its a network issue but the bosses and clients want to know
how to fix this said "network issue."
I have read the rsync issues list. Some of what is suggested we might try
