obtain maximum portability I would prefer to format it as FAT32 (it comes
formatted that way) - that way Windows, Linux and FreeBSD machines can
access it.
Unfortunately FreeBSD doesn't grok really large FAT32 partitions :( When I
attempt to mount it, I get ->

msdosfs bug?
Hello.
After running this program with msdosfs mounted in /mnt, I got a
file with some garbage in skipped space. Is it a bug in my local
installation/hardware or real kernel bug?

"sleeping without queue" ?
Hello!
My attempt to build openoffice.org-3 seems to be hanging. Pressing
Ctrl-T produces:
load: 0.11 cmd: tcsh 79759 [sleeping without queue] 0.00u 0.00s 0% 0k
(tcsh is used by OOo's build-script). What is this "sleeping without
queue" state, and why is process in it for so long?
This is an 4-CPU amd64 system with 4Gb of RAM. Only 16% of the swap is

GELI partition mount on boot fails after 7.0 -> 7.1-PRERELEASE upgrade
I was using a GELI partition for /usr/home on 7.0, so it attaches and mounts
on boot. The problem is it stopped working after the system was upgraded to
RELENG_7/7.1-PRERELEASE. Here's how it goes:
I have the following /etc/fstab:
/dev/ad0s1b none swap sw 0 0
/dev/ad0s1a / ufs rw 1 1

mount_ext2fs in 7-STABLE?
...mesg conseals the Linux-partitions (hda5, hda6 alias /dev/ad0s5 and
/dev/ad0s6) residing in a "DOS Extended" partition (/dev/ad0s3). Shouldn't
there be a notice about the mapped ad0s5 and ad0s6?
BTW2: shouldn't the mapped by label to /dev/ext2fs/foo like
/dev/ntfs/bar or /dev/msdosfs/baz ?

FREEBSD 7.1-STABLE crashes when trying to mount USB device of solaris UFS filesystem

fsck'd before mounted, or else I should have tried to mount it ro. When
I tried to mount it with the read-only option set, the kernel panicked
once more, and another core was dumped on my dumpdev.
Recently, I keep having problems with USB disks. For instance, yesterday
night I left an msdosfs USB partition mounted on my pc. This morning,
the first thing I did was to check my emails through Thunderbird. When I
clicked on the first unread message, everything freezed. There was no
keyboard or mouse interaction whatsoever (both USB devices), and I had
to shutdown my box via the shutdown...

FreeBSD 9.0 - GPT boot problems?
Hi,
I just installed FreeBSD 9.0-release / amd64 on a new machine (Acer Aspire X1470).
I installed from a usb memory stick (the default amd64 image), which I booted by pressing "F12" and selecting it from the boot menu on the machine.
I installed on a SSD (which replaced the hard drive originally in the machine), using the default scheme for 9.0 (GPT).
The installation was painless (many

Encrypted volume - how?
Hi all,
I'm looking for a way to recreate the functionality of PGP Disk (under
Win32). Basically, create an encrypted file, which contains a filesystem
which can then be mounted in any mount point.
I know I can use GELI in FreeBSD 6 - as I understand, it performs the
encryption at the partition level (the whole partition is encrypted).
I'd like to be able to simply unmount my

Note: I mis-spoke earlier when I made reference to using ntfs-3g to
access the stick. (Duh!) As you say, once the stick has your test.img
file on it, it contains a FAT32 filesystem, not NTFS. So I can access
it from FreeBSD simply by mounting it with "-t msdosfs".
Fdisk on FreeBSD appears to confirm that the stick is how you wished
and expected it to be:
