CentOS 5.0 /proc Backup/Restore
...iles according to the docs. When I try to run my normal backup which uses cpio to create archives, it complains about not being able to access many files in the /proc directory. This is also true of some files in /sys/devices. Searching for something that wouldn't have this problem, I tried mondorescue. One of the first things I noticed is, by default, mondorescue skips the /proc directory. Does anyone know the details of my observations here? Are these files automatically generated at runtime? Thanks is advance for any insight someone can provide here! John -------------- next part ----...

OT - backup question/advice
Hello, I have been using mondorescue to backup to dvd for several months now without any problems. Since upgrading to Centos 4.4, I now receive a few errors. The errors are for files in /var/named/chroot/proc. I guess these files change so when I do a differntial backup they aren't there and result in errors. (Never got any er...

...I read that iso9660 support could be added to syslinux.efi for that, but I really have no clue where to start from, and even before trying what may be way outside of my capabilities, I'd alredy like to know if that what is really needed. Context: I do that in order to add UEFI support to the MondoRescue Disaster Recovery project I'm leading (http://www.mondorescue.org). I used grub 0.99 for the RHEL6 support, but don't want to mess with that especially as I already have procedures to generate syslinux/isolinux/pxelinux conf files in the tool. Thanks in advance for any hint Bruno. -- Open...

Best way to migrate a server?
I was just wondering what recommendations you have on migrating a CentOS 5 install between servers? I've done similar in the past by setting up a minimal install in the new server, use tar to copy over the old install and reboot. I was thinking of rsync this time. Is that an acceptable thing to do or have I missed something important? thanks -------------- next part -------------- An

...stro I'm installing will be on 3 partitions (/, /boot, and /home). Will what I'm proposing populate the directories in these partitions or will it dump everything into /? I realize that I probably be better off creating a snapshot and restoring from that but I have never had good luck with MondoRescue or Clonezilla. Thought I'd better ask now before I stuck my foot in it. -- Bob Holtzman Key ID: 8D549279 "If you think you're getting free lunch, check the price of the beer"

...this server as a PDC so that it is not too different from using their former windows 2000 server. I'll be managing this server, which is currently a staging server for web development (php/mysql/cvs). Anyone has a opinion on this, or better ideas? My backups will be based on utilities and mondorescue, kept on a internal (cold-swap drawer) hard-drive that I would take every week (2-drawers rotation). Any recommendations welcome, will provide more details if needed. TIA, -- Ugo -> Please don't send a copy of your reply by e-mail. I read the list. -> Please avoid top-posting, long...

I use rdiff-backup, but I hesitate to recommend a tool that has been unsupported for over 6 years and does have quite a few bugs. --

Backup Question?
This may be slightly off topic. I am using FreePBX, and using it's backup feature. Here is the question part: I would like to copy my backup off the asterisk server. >From your experiences, which approach seems more resilient to failure: Push the backup from asterisk to another server using STFP or FTP? Crash recovery
While playing with the graphic card drivers, I broke up the system and now I've a kernel panic with not syncing error. I did backup the system with mondorescue but I forgot to write the iso image files to the DVD rom. Can I burn the ISO file in rescue mode or in CentOS livecd environment? Already tried in the LiveCD env, but, as soon as I eject the live CD to put a blank DVD, the system halts ! Are there any other options available? Please advise. ------...

Making a clone of an LVM-based EL5 install
Does anybody here have any idea how to make an exact copy of a drive that has LVM partitions? I'm having trouble using dd to do this for an EL5 server. We're trying to diagnose a software problem of some kind and would like an exact, perfect copy of the software running so that we can see exactly what the problem is without disturbing our production copy. It's been admin practice
