oplocks and Excel
I have a small business client with a new samba file server. It's CentOS 4.2 and Samba samba-3.0.10-1.4E.2. When they save open Excel files from Windows, they are prompted to overwrite the existing file. I mean, when they click the little disk icon or use Ctrl-S or File--Save. Excel would normally just write over the file, not check with an "are you sure?" prompt. But that's

star --> tape
I just got an error using star to send an archive to tape. I know the tape works--I tested it with gnu tar yesterday. But when trying find /home -mount -depth -type f | star -c list=- -z f=/dev/st0 I got the error: star: can only copy files When I wrote to the tape with tar yesterday, tar -zcvf /dev/st0 /home/matt worked fine. And that star command works when the output destination if a file

Upgrading samba past the regular packages
Despite Craig's excellent help with my Excel/Samba, I continue to have trouble with Samba 3.0.10 under CentOS 4.2. Quickbooks, now, too, is just acting really weird. I'm tempted to upgrade beyond the regular packages, although I really don't like to do that, because the samba list and a lot of info online lead me to believe that 3.0.11+ fixes these issues. What's the best way to

No module named snack
Hi everyone--I'm back on the list after some time not managing any Centos machines. It's good to be back. I'm trying to switch a server from sendmail to postfix. It's Centos 4.6. I installed postfix and system-switch-mail. When I run system-switch-mail, I get Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/sbin/system-switch-mail", line 89, in <module> main()

prompt to overwrite when re-saving file in MS-Excel to samba server
I have a couple users, in a new install of a samba file server on CentOS 4.2, who are being prompted to overwrite the existing file when in MS-Excel and simply saving the active spreadsheet. Normally, File--Save (or just clicking on the disk icon) for an already saved file will re-save the file without prompting to overwrite. I have my doubts about whether this could be a server-side issue, and

very slow writes from samba client to samba server
I'm running Fedora Core 3 on two machines; a server and a client. On the server, I have the package samba-3.0.10-1.fc3 installed; I assume this means I have samba version 3.0.10. On the client, I have samba-client-3.0.10-1.fc3, i.e., the same version. On the same network, I have a Windows XP home machine that connects to the same shares as the FC3 client machine. Reading and writing files on

CentOS and Dell Support
I'm a fairly experienced RH and Fedora user and admin looking to try CentOS for the first time. I have lots of experience with Dell servers and I'd like to stick with them. Although I'm sure it's not always strictly enforced, Dell claims that it won't provide warranty hardware support on servers installed with an un-Dell-supported OS (basically, anything other Windows, RH, and
