TeX distribution on Windows
...On Duncan Murdoch's Rtools page fptex is
still recommended, but it turns out that fptex is "defunct" as of May 2005,
see
http://www.metz.supelec.fr/~popineau/xemtex-7.html
So, what is suggested? TUG (tug.org) recommends something called proTeXt,
which is said to be "based on MiKTeX", for Windows users. Since MikTeX
could be used with R, that sounds like a good alternative.
Any comments to that?

Windows problem related to using shortPathName for Sweave style file
In the process of updating R to R 2.7 alpha or R 2.7 beta for the
BioConductor 2.2 builds on Windows, I have hit a snag because the BioC
build system has long path names (e.g. D:\biocbld\bbs-2.2-bioc\R) and
these path names are not resolving properly by MiKTeX 2.7 during
vignette construction. Take, for example, the attached vignette from
Biobase, Bioconductor.Rnw. I have built R from source at
E:\paboyoun\bbs-2.2-bioc\R
and the session information for this R is
=== BEGIN R BLOCK ===
> sessionInfo()

miktex 2.6 and R
Hi,
I am new to Latex and in the process of installing miktex to work with R on
windows XP professional. From earlier posts, I see that fptex was the
preferred version, but it is no longer available. Now miktex is preferred.
However, there are known issues with finding the style files in version 2.4.
Fortunately, www.murdoch-sutherland.com/Rtools/mikitex.html...

Sweave and Miktex (Sweave.sty not found)
Hi all,
I know from googling that this is a common problem; I've just tried what I
understand to be the common solutions to know avail -- maybe I'm just
confused.
I installed Miktex 2.8 -- it seems to be working fine.
I'm using this demo document: http://www.stat.berkeley.edu/~houston/demo.Rnw
I've copied the Sweave.sty file into at this point multiple places on the
Miktex path, including folders where I can see that it is looking for, and
successfully finding, sty f...

texi2pdf doesn't find the correct MikTex installation due to erroneous Sys.which()
I checked after this question popped up on Stackoverflow:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/44785961/compile-pdf-in-rstudio-works-but-knit2pdf-does-not-work-in-r-or-rstudio
On Windows, texi2pdf looks for the texify.exe of Miktex, but looks in a
very wrong place:

Problem Sweaving vignettes: MiKTeX's texi2dvi reports errors
...ows binary R distributions, and have the same problem on both
the latest developer version (2.2.0 Beta) and the latest patched version
(2.1.1) . For the Tex processing, I first tried downloading and installing
fpTex, but found that it doesn't have texi2dvi. Some Googling informed me
that recent MiKTeX versions now have that function, so I just downloaded
that (the small installation). Indeed there is a texi2dvi. The first time I
ran it, it downloaded a class file it needed, so now it at least executes.
However, when I try to run it on the test Sweave tex file, I get an error.
Here's the sequ...

Package Building under Windows with MikTeX 2.6
...Rds,
I wrote a small function in R and would like to create a package. The
necessary documentation is done, Rtools etc. are installed and I am
still unable to complete the process under Windows. I did extensive
research in the archives and read the Murdoch-Sutherland website on the
Rtools and MikTeX hints. I realize that I understand only half or less
of what is said there concerning the MikTeX-R interaction in creating
packages. I am sorry.
I also read the very helpful Rossi paper on 'Making R Packages under
Windows. A Tutorial' as of 2006/01. I also tried to understand the .pdf...

LaTeX, MiKTeX, LyX: A Guide for the Perplexed
...the past several months. Read several books and have learned a great deal about data manipulation, statistical analysis, and graphics.
Now I want to learn how to make nice looking documents and about "literate programming." My understanding is that R users normally do this using LaTeX, MiKTeX, LyX, etc. in conjuction with Sweave. An alternative might be to use the R2wd package to create Word documents.
So I guess I have four questions:
1. How do I choose between the various options? Why would someone decide to use LaTeX instead of MiKTeX or vice versa for example?
2. What are the...

Locating MiKTeX
I came across this program to locate MiKTeX file:
http://docs.miktex.org/2.7/sdk/findfile_8cpp-example.html
If the exe of this were included with R then it seems it might
provide a reliable way to locate MiKTeX which we don't currently have
since AFAIK there is no adequate registry key for MiKTeX.
Since its a tiny program it would not...

However, when I tex the resulting .tex file (after installing a4.sty) I get the error below.

MikTeX will be assumed in R 2.2.0 in Windows
I've just committed some changes to allow R to be built and to use
MikTeX without needing the Rd.sty files to be installed to localtexmf.
Unfortunately, the changes are not compatible with other TeX packages,
so if you're not using MikTeX you'll need to edit a couple of the config
files (or set an environment variable).
I'd appreciate hearing of any probl...

Sweave not found from MikTeX?
I've been working on a LaTeX document that contains Sweave code and cannot
get MikTeX to find the Sweave.sty file. I've added the c:\rw1081\share\texmf

variables ) but to no avail. Is there a trick to getting Sweave installed
correctly when using MikTeX on Windows XP? Do I need to move/copy the

Building manuals are failing now that MikTex 2.9 has removed texi2dvi.exe
According to the MikTex bug reports [1], MikTex 2.9 has removed
texi2dvi.exe last week (on 2015-09-29) as "it was not compatible
(anymore) with the original shell script texi2dvi (GNU Texinfo)." I
found this out the hard way as I just (unknowingly) updated MikTex
this evening, and then, while building R-devel_20...
