Unusable performance over WAN (part 2)
Hi all,
Disregard my previous posts, I've consolidated everything here.
I'm having terrible performance issues with samba over a WAN
(point-to-point T1 link).
Doing a copy of a 2MB file from a samba server to a linux client
running smbclient takes over 5 minutes.
SCPing the same file takes seconds.
The server is running samba version 3.0.25c with kernel 2.6.16.18.
I've put up a set

smb.conf setting for file permissions?
Hi,
I have a very old version of samba on one of the boxes I'm not allowed
to update. I have a request from a user group that all the group be
allowed to edit a set of file. At the command line I 'chmod 666 $file'
and all is well. I can edit and save the file. The permissions return to
744. I want the file permissions to not be changed when someone saves
a file. What parameter can I

error today
Morning,
I have a user that keeps getting a temporary profile. The user is
logging into the machine so the authentication through samba to ldap
is working. The only item that looks odd to me in the machine log
(/var/log/samba/$MACHINE.log) is 'Re-using invalid record'. I've had the
user boot the machine and I've restarted samba (# service smb restart)
and the user is still getting

odd mac situation
Morning,
This is somewhat off topic. I've not thought of a better place to ask
than here.
I have a user on a Macbook (Mac OS X 10.5, Leopard) with Microsoft Office
2008 for the mac and Parallels running an image of Microsoft Windows XP
Pro with Microsoft Office 2007. Inside Parallels and XP Pro the user can
open a spreadsheet shared from a Windows Server 2003 box, and yet the
user gets an

Unable to Join Domain
I recently setup a new server with CentOS 5.2. Everything works great on
the server except when I try to join the domain it simply tells me:
"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "Domain":
The user name could not be found.
I have researched this error and attempted a number of fixes but have been
unable to resolve the issue. I am able to connect to

profiles?
Sometimes a user logging in takes a while. I suspect the
time delay is due to the size of a user's profile. Where
is the profile data kept and how can this data be scrubbed
or compressed?

Problem with Snow Leopard and Samba
We have a user who purchased a Mac Book Pro with OSX 10.6.2.
Everyday he has a problem with one or another Samba Server. One day it's
FileShare1 , the next day it's ProductionData Server.
I use Windows and Linux and neither has a problem connecting to these
servers. He has XP in VMWare Fusion and that works fine. But about every
other day he comes and says some server won't allow

Samba & Vista
I'm trying to use smbclient to look at a Vista box but I keep getting:
# smbclient -L user-pc -U Kellie
Password: <Kellie's password>
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
I know the user/password combination is good.
I googled around and got the impression that Vista didn't play well
with Samba because of some authentication protocol that Vista uses but
I also got the

hundreds of 'smb -D' processes
I have hundreds of the 'smb -D' processes over several days
running on my primary samba box that serves home directories,
shared directories, etc. This is a Fedora Core 5 box with the
latest OS patches.
Glancing through the smb.conf file I didn't see anything that
looked like it would allow hundreds of processes.
I ran a strace on one of the early processes and it seemed to

ldap groups?
Hi,
In the past I have created an LDAP group 'Accounting' and used
that group to set permissions on shares coming from a Windows 2003
server. I am now trying to create a group 'Marketing' for the same
purpose. I have created the group in phpLdapAdmin and created the
group using smbldap-groupadd. Oh, and I copied the 'Accounting' group
to 'Marketing'. Each time I

read-only share still requires domain user authentication?
Hi,
I have an issue with how I have setup one of my shares. I have a file
system on one of my boxes that sync's to a cygwin repository on the
net. I eventually will have my internal windows workstations do a weekly
(or some frequency) sync to my internal cygwin repository. When at a
workstation I often do this cygwin sync by hand to make sure the user
has the latest cygwin files. When I run

how was my samba compiled?
Morning,
I'm using the samba that came with my Fedora Core 5. I'm starting to get
core dumps in the smbd process and think I need to recompile the latest
samba code specifically for my samba box. Is there a way to get a list
of compiler flags from the daemons so I can compile the same way? The
biggest thing I am concerned about is LDAP (OpenLDAP). I think everything
else is vanilla.

samba and ssl certificates?
Morning,
I am working on enabling the ssl portion of several of my services (https,
imaps, ftps, etc). I am using a free certification authorithy (CA) for
my certificates. I need to get this CA's root certificate installed in
my several windows workstations. All these workstations are part of my
samba PDC domain.
Is there a way I can use samba, or maybe the logon.bat file, to install

requesting help setting share permissions
Hi,
I have a share I'm trying to lock down to a specific group and I'm not
hold my mouth right. I want this share available to a single group. I
want this share to have directory permissions 0770 when a directory is
created and file permissions 0660. I want the users accessing this share
to never be able to change these permissions. When a file or directory
is created, I want the group to

now I really may have a problem, yuck
Morning,
Well I ordered a Windows Server 2008 Standard for a need around here and
after just spending an hour with Dell support (nice fellow, not his fault)
I find that now the 2008 Server is too *new* for the Samba NT4 PDC model.
I got this box joined fine with my domain, but any time I try to log
into it over RDP, and the new box authenticates with samba (and samba
talks to OpenLDAP) the box

problems with roaming profiles
I have a samba 3 domain running for a while and have noticed that
desktop.ini is displayed often on login and that my personal desktop is
not being sync'd with my repository. Last week I was building a new box
for a user and am converting this same user to a domain profile at the
same time. I have found that the user's romaining profile is not being
created on the samba server. The user

Steps to move away parts away from samba?
Morning,
I like samba, but I'm tired of what I feel is fighting battles. I want
to move the PDC portion of samba to an Active Directory server (I've
been told AD is a part of Server 2008?). Would someone please list the
steps for doing this? My rough idea so far is:
- take an LDIF from OpenLDAP
- install the server 2008 box
- load the LDIF into AD
- join the AD box to the samba domain

attempted upgrade this weekend
Morning,
This weekend I attempted an upgrade of my primary samba server from 3.0.24
to 3.3.3. When testing this primary server after the upgrade I had a
few issues, so rolled back the upgrade until I can find solutions. This
server also has the OpenLDAP server local to and co-located with samba.
The two things that initially didn't seem right are that each time I
logged into a windows XP box
