Mini-PC box to run server
On the cheap side, the ITX or even MicroATX machines work great. These are commodity items, so they tend to be far less expensive than custom solutions. Various manufacturers, but we've had very good success with any of the AOpen MicroATX boards and their slimline MicroATX case: Aluminum: http://usa.aopen.com/products/housing/A340-ser...

[OFFTOPIC] Need small PC
...ng for a small PC with very specific criteria; these machines are going into an industrial setting (which I cannot explain in detail); I was hoping someone on this list might have experience with something like this. I would appreciate any pointers. The machines MUST: a) Be as small as possible (MicroATX motherboard would be a plus); b) Be based on an Intel i815 chipset or its successors (i815E, i845...); c) Have at least 1 PCI slot; d) Have at least 1 serial port; 2 preferred; e) Run stock Linux 2.4 without fuss. It would be NICE if: f) The machines can be run in a no-moving-parts configuration,...

ZFS Hardware Check, OS X Compatibility, NEWBIE!!
This is my first post here, and i hope it is ok that i posted in this thread. I have been doing a bit of reading on the solaris platforms, and seem to be inclined to try out the open solaris os or solaris 10. My only worry is that my lack of knowledge with the command line may make this difficult regarding trouble shooting. It seems fairly straighforward creating zpools etc, but maybe nexenta is

Tyan K8SE (S2892) / nForce Pro Experiences
Has anyone installed Linux (CentOS or other) on a Tyan K8SE (S2892) motherboard? I'd really like to hear your experiences -- with this board or Nvidia's nForce Pro chipset in general. I'm looking to build a new server using this board but would like to find some other experiences first. I've googled myself blue but haven't found any reviews or postings regarding this

Via EPIA Mini-ITX motherboard
Just to drag this thread on a bit further ... I've been looking into these little boxes, thinking I could use one as a firewall/gateway. My one requirement is that it would need to have two PCI slots (one can be low-profile), and although I've seen PCI riser cards that can give me two slots, they've been rare, and cases that are suitable (i.e have the space, and back panels are

Opteron Mobo Suggestions
I've been planning to build a dual Opteron server for awhile. I'd like to get people's suggestions on a suitable motherboard. I've looked at the Tyan K8SE (S2892) and K8SRE (S2891) but would like to find more Linux-specific experiences with these boards. Some features I expect are at least 4 SATA (SATA-300?) ports, serial console support in the BIOS, USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394

Tyan Thunder K8SE S2892 Report
I had my eye on the Tyan dual-Opteron mobos for awhile. I tried to find a posting *anywhere* sharing experiences with these boards under Linux. No such luck. So placing myself under the heading "Where Angles Fear to Tread," I went ahead and built a system anyway. Here's what I've learned. The specs: Tyan Thunder K8SE S2892, BIOS 1.01 2x Opteron 270, 2Ghz Dual-Core, retail

The best motherboard for a home ZFS fileserver
I''m a fan of ZFS since I''ve read about it last year. Now I''m on the way to build a home fileserver and I''m thinking to go with Opensolaris and eventually ZFS!! Apart from the other components, the main problem is to choose the motherboard. The offer is incredibly high and I''m lost. Minimum requisites should be: - working well with Open Solaris ;-) -

ATI VGA Passthrough / Xen 4.2 / Linux 3.8.6
Hi, I''m trying to get VGA passthrough to work to an XP x64 guest, and I''m seeing "interesting" things happening. I''m using the kernel and userspace tools from here: http://xen.crc.id.au/support/guides/install/# on Scientific Linux 6. I gave up on trying to get an Nvidia card to work in the guest having read about the extra patches required to get a
