gamm (mgvc) and time-varying coefficient model
Dear R users,
I have repeated measurements on individuals. I want to estimate the
time-varying effect of a factor variable X (taking three levels), e.g. a
model in the spirit of Hastie and Tibshirani (1993).
I am considering using the package "mgvc" which implements generalized
additive models, especially the function gamm, which estimates
generalized additive mixed models, and thus, can deal with the
correlated repeated measures within individuals.
However, I am confused as to how to specify the time-varying coefficient
part of the for...

Smooth monotone estimation on R
Hi all,
I'm looking for smooth monotone estimation packages, preferably using splines.
I downloaded the 'cobs' package and intend to use it, but since it offers only quadratic splines based on L1 minimization, I'd like to compare its performance to that of a more 'mainstream' cubic-spline, L2-norm minimizing spline. Preferably a smoothing spline.
Does anyone know of such

Optimal platform for R
I'm looking to buy a new desktop which will primarily be used for
analyses of large datasets (100s of MB). I've seen postings from several
years back re the 'optimal' platform for running R, but nothing more
recently.
Specifically, I want to know: 1) if I run R under Windows, does having a
dual-processor machine help speed things up? And 2) is it still true
that R performs
