Metalog and Shorewall
Hi Tom and list,
Still trying to set up Shorewall logging. I understand that Shorewall require syslog to get logging working, however I have metalog. Is this
possible to use metalog as logging facility for Shorewall? I was reading
http://www.shorewall.net/shorewall_logging.html and it describes other
method ( ULOG ). I understand that I have to compile ULOG support in the
kernel... where do I find it in kernel build options?

not logging as exspected
hello
logging is not working as i exspect it. i am not sure if this is due to
a but or a misunderstanding on my part.
i use shorewall 2.0.4 and for logging metalog 0.8.
the problem is that new connections of certain (most) types don''t get
logged. when i browse for example i see such:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dec 3 15:49:12 [kernel] Shorewall:fw2net:AllowDNS:IN= OUT=eth0

Suggestion for logging documentation (syslog-ng example)
...have a suggestion for the logging part of the documentation website.
It would be nice to have example configurations for the various alternatives
that exist for the traditional (Linux) syslog daemons (sysklogd) appended to
the Shorewall logging documentation. E.g. msyslog, newsyslog, syslog-ng,
metalog.
In a recent posting on the Gentoo-Security mailing list I sent my
configuration for syslog-ng to log Shorewall messages into seperate logfiles.

Maybe others can post examples of their configuration.
I know about the...

Re: Security problems in bind -- persisting?
...there is new data on each serial port in use
(I had it happily using 2, didn't try more.)
a directory per serial port to store logfiles in, absolutely
raw as they arrive, but separated out into different files
(at log entry joins) to keep file size small
There was also a metalog file recording log rotations on the data
streams (filenames, sizes and times). By keeping this out of band it
could not be spoofed by anything coming down the serial line.
The metalog also contains a daily traffic summary that you can watch
to see easily if something is being flooded or a serial p...

ext3 involved in kernel panic in 2.6.13?
Dual Opteron system running ext3 atop drbd (network RAID) devices,
which, in turn, are atop LVM logical volumes. The underlying device
is hardware SCSI RAID via a LSILogic HBA. The kernel is vanilla
2.6.13 on a Gentoo-based system.
A panic occurred, which contains references to ext3 code.
I'm not sure how others manage to get these typed out, but I'm

Hy,

a firewall/bridge composed of 3 ethernet devices and 1 virtual one.
