hi.
i'm hitting a wall each time i try to format a 3 terabyte partition. i'm
able to create the partition using parted but whenever i try to create a
3 terabyte xfs or jfs or ext3 filesystem, the mounted filesystem created
is only 1 terabyte. i tried centos x86 and x86_64 4.0 but i always hit a

What do you think about this motherboard?
Hello all..... I would like to know if anyone here has had good
experience with this Supermicro
motherboard.....http://supermicro.com/products/motherboard/P4/E7221/P8SCT.cfm
I am thinking about using it in an entry level mail and file server
with a 3ware card and 200 GB SATA drives. Cost is a factor here
otherwise I would go for an Opteron board instead.

RAID 5 vs. RAID 10
Hi,
I am looking into purchasing a new server. This server will be
mission-critical.
I have read and somewhat understood the theories behind RAIDs 0, 1, 5, 10 &
JBOD. However, I would like to get some feedback from those who have
experience in implementing and recovering from a HDD failure using RAID.
Hardware specs include:-
Dual Xeon 3.2 GHz
2 GB RAM
I would like to implement

Intel based Mac and CentOS scores a win!
Interesting article on multi-booting the developer Intel based Mac with MacOS,
WinXP and you guessed it: CentOS! Way to go, especially since Fedora kernel
panicked on them....

upgrade from fedora to centos?
Hiya, just wondering how easy this would be, I'm guessing through yum,
but is there a preferable process from updating from fed core 3 to
centos ideally keeping settings as is? (desktop rather than server,
just want to migrate to centos, nothing too essential apart from raw
data).

SiL311x SataRaid (sata_sil)
Hi,
On my x86_64 system I have a SiL311x controller that can do RAID. If I
configure my 2 identical disks in a RAID1 setup, I would expect to see
only 1 block device on Linux. Still I see 2 block devices.
Is this intentional, and if so, isn't that dangerous ? (i.e. writing to
both disks at the same time)
Anyone with an insight, please explain :)

OT raid controller
Sorry for an OT post, but given the recent discussions here re raid, I
was wondering if anyone had any info on the
ITE 8212 RAID controller (GigaRAID)
This is a PATA HW RAID as found on the GigaByte GA-8I915P-PRO
motherboard. (I can see an IC on the board labeled GigaRAID. Their
manual claims that is has it's own CPU).
I am not using it because I have SATA, but I am still curious about

Open Office 1.9.x
Having used Open Office 1.9.x on the XP side of my box, I decided to
install it on the CentOS side. (The default OO was 1.1.2, for heaven's
sake!) I downloaded the Linux 386 version from the OO site.
I immediately ran into problems--
1) The installation instructions were for OO 1.x.
2) The download appears to be source RPMs.
Although I've used UNIX & Linux for over 15 years,

SW-RAID on 2 SATA controllers
Hi,
Would it be advisable to use SW-RAID using 2 different SATA controllers.
My system happens to have both a VIA VT8237 and SIL3114 SATA controller,
and I thought for both performance reason and redundancy using both for a
2 disk RAID1 array would be best.
But it's possible that SW-RAID does not like or cannot overcome problems
with such a setup or that one of these drivers is known to

Promise FastTrak series
Hello,
In some weeks I'm going to reinstall some old RedHat9 based servers with
Promise FastTrak TX2000 "semi-hardware" RAID1 controllers. I just tried to
install CentOS 4.0 on a computer with a spare card and as usual both HDD
attached to the RAID1 controller are seen separately by the installer
because the specific driver for the TX2000 wasn't loaded. Nothing new here,

Really? Then I'll re-read them since there's been a second confirmation.
Just know that I wasn't trying to make it about good/bad.
I'm just trying to make the point that companies aren't just

RE: CentOS Digest, Vol 6, Issue 3
...-----------------------
It is mathematically impossible for someone who makes more than you
to be anything but richer than you. Any tax rate that penalizes them
will also penalize you similarly (to those below you, and then below
them). Linear algebra, let alone differential calculus or even ele-
mentary concepts of limits, is mutually exclusive with US journalism.
So forget even attempting to explain how tax cuts work. ;->

DVD writer problem
I have an NEC DVD-RW ND2500A (that's not the label I bought it under,
but that's what it really is.) It's supposed to read/write CDs, DVDs,
DVD+Rs, and DVD-Rs. I'm basically dual booting between XP and CentOS 4.
Following the recipe in "The Linux Cookbook", I tried to copy a DVD using:
dd if=/dev/hdd of=/tmp/diskfile.iso
then
cdrecord dev=/dev/hdd fs=32m

Tyan Thunder K8SE S2892 Report
I had my eye on the Tyan dual-Opteron mobos for awhile. I tried to find
a posting *anywhere* sharing experiences with these boards under Linux.
No such luck. So placing myself under the heading "Where Angles Fear to
Tread," I went ahead and built a system anyway. Here's what I've learned.
The specs:
