Query change mdbox_rotate_size & mdbox_rotate_interval after sometime
Hello All,
If I change the mdbox_rotate_size to 100 MB & mdbox_rotate_interval
to say 3 days after a year of usage what would be the impact on
existing mails and new mails?
Thanks/DP

Different mdbox_rotate_size for primary and alternate storage
Hello.
In order to speed up backups of very very old messages I would like to set
two different limits for mdbox_rotate_size. Like, 50M for primary storage
and 100M or larger for alternate storage.
There is no mention in docs or such a possibility, so I assume it is not
possible. Is that correct?
While I am at it, is it possible to configure primary storage as maildir
(sturdy indexes) and altstorage as mdbox (more del...

What does the mdbox_rotate_size influence?
I wondered why mdbox_rotate_size is 2MB by default.
I thought if I increased it to 16MB, maybe there would be less disk io,
but I dont see any difference. Furthermore I read in some thread that
increasing it from 2MB, could give problems when deleting messages, can
someone explain this?
Does anyone have this on a cephfs mount...

mdbox, mdbox_rotate_size 2m default
Anyone else test using different values?
Was 2M chosen as a default based on anything specific?
Is there any kind of known range where performance starts to go
downhill if its greater than x or less than y?
Im curious if there would be any obvious reason why I shouldnt set it
to 5-10 megs

config typo in 2.0.alpha2
The mdbox_rotate_size and mdbox_rotate_min_size parameters are
specified in bytes not kilobytes.
doc/example-config/conf.d/mail.conf:
# Maximum dbox file size in kilobytes until it's rotated.
#mdbox_rotate_size = 2048
# Minimum dbox file size in kilobytes before it's rotated
# (overrides mdbox_rotate_days)

Some questions about mdbox
...s. Is the backup consistent?
What would happens if I lose indexes? Can I still recover the messages? Reading the doc it seems I would lose all the message flags and all the messages would be in INBOX, is this right?
*3? Performance tuning with mdbox*
I have read in dovecot archive about using mdbox_rotate_size & mdbox_rotate_interval to balance between a lot of smaill files (like Maildir) or really big files (a "variant" of mbox). I have tested with a big vaule of mdbox_rotate_size (100 MB) and is a complete disaster for backup:if a user delete a message, then a nightly cronjob purges the m...

Questiosn about dbox
...e indexes, but I am not sure about dbox.
Should we also restore "old indexes" and merge with the "new indexes"
in order to restore the deleted messages?
- The previous question applies to sdbox and mdbox. In the case of
mdbox, we can configure rotation of files using /mdbox_rotate_size/ . We
would like to rotate daily, not based in size (our users ask us for
yesterday's backup). How can we accomplish this?
We have now 17.000.000 messages in our maildir, almost 1.5 TB (zlib
compresssion enabled). Our backup time with bacula is rather bad: 24
hours for a full backup,...

EXT4/LVM recommendations for 3TB of mdbox ?
...ommend a ?thin? logical volume ? Our storage (IBM Storwize
v7000) already have thin provisioning capabilities.
The server will be a VMware virtual machine running Debian with RDM LUNs
of 500GB. Data blocks will be automatically spread across several RAID
disk (SSD, SAS, SATA) by the v7000. The ?mdbox_rotate_size? will be
configured around 10MB.
Thanks,
Nicolas C.

Dovecot never release preallocated space in mdbox
Hello everyone,
I am currently evaluating dovecot for our new email production servers
(20k+ mailboxes) and found out something strange.
I'm using those settings on Dovecot 2.2.4 (x86_64 / Slackware / compiled
from sources)
mdbox_rotate_size = 128M
mdbox_rotate_interval = 1d
mdbox_preallocate_space = yes
with virtual users and location like :
mail_location = mdbox:~/mdbox
I don't think the remaining config is relevant but ask me if you need
some other parts.
Using test accounts for 2 weeks now I've figured that the 128M
pre...

size of "m.XXX" in mdbox
Hi,
How to tune the size of each "m.xxx" file in mdbox format , in
order to optimize the ratio size/number of files ? (I can see for
instance more than 100 000 files in one directory due to very large
mailbox size)
If such parameter exists, what is the typical value ?
Thanks

doveadm altmove fails to pack messages?
...quite sure, but it almost seems like every storage
file that contains messages to be moved is simply split into two
parts, even if a part might only contain a single message.
This seems quite curious, since the idea of mdbox is after all to
store as many messages in a single file as fits in mdbox_rotate_size,
and dovecot-lda can quite successfully append messages to existing
storage files. So why can't doveadm altmove? Is this the expected
behavior, or is there something wrong with my setup?
Thanks again,
Lauri

Disconnect users for a distinct period of time?
...figuration. A "doveadm block -u <joe> -m 'sorry: running maintenance, please, come back later'" alike tool/funtionality would be ideal.
Background: I would like to avoid any modification of my user's maildirs by a running dovecot server while modifying maildir formats, mdbox_rotate_size setting, and alike, where I would need doveadm/dsnyc access to userdb. (I know there a ways to achieve this without downtimes, and I have already done so.)
I just want to be sure that I haven't overseen such a tool/functionality in the documentation. Did I or didn't I?
Thanks and regards,...

questions about maildir to mdbox migration
Hi folks! I converted some of the spools on my mail server from
maildir to mdbox. It went smoothly and the performance has been great.
However, I have two questions regarding the process.
First, I failed to notice the fairly low default mdbox_rotate_size,
and I changed it in dovecot.conf after the migration. Is it possible to
somehow make that change retroactive, to coalesce the couple thousand
"storage/m.*" files that are anywhere from a few hundred bytes up to a
few megabytes, into a smaller number of larger files, without re-doing
the...

Questions about converting maildir to mdbox.
...propose, but i am
wondoring how would dovecot convert this, like if i convert all mail from
maildir to mdbox it would make many mailbox based on this seetings ? Or in
the first convert it would make a big mdbox file and after it it will rotate
by day or it would make many boxes just based on size?
mdbox_rotate_size = 5m
mdbox_rotate_interval = 1d
Well, another thing can i make rotate interval happens in a certain time of
day? end from where it takes this time ? it rotates at midnight ?
Another one!, if i lose the index files what really happens ? Sometimes in
my server the index get corrupet and as i am rea...
