Maildir dirty syncs
http://dovecot.org/patches/1.1/maildir-dirty-syncs.diff
This patch adds a new maildir_very_dirty_syncs setting. If set to "yes",
Dovecot assumes it's the only one changing the cur/ directory (so other
MDAs can add mails to new/ without problems). This makes it possible to
avoid rescanning the cur/ directory all the time looking for filenames.
It also looks like (in stress testing) it still scans the cur/ directory
unneededly in some situations, but it shouldn't be common. Maybe I'll
look into...

Pine 4.02 and directory perms
Hey linux-security-ers:
I just compiled/installed Pine 4.02 for my RH 5.0 machine today (didn't
see an RPM last time I checked ftp.redhat.com:/pub/contrib), and after I
got it installed, it kept giving me errors about not being able to create
a lockfile when dinking with my mailspool in /var/spool/mail.
After doing some digging on DejaNews and the Pine website, I find a
document who says the

Shared mailboxes setups and dictionaries
Hello,
I am relatively new to the world of MTAs and MDAs, and I try to set up
shared mailboxes.
So far I have somehow succeeded - I have defined a shared namespace and
I have managed to create per-mailbox ACL files thanks to the doveadm
command.
However, I have been following these resources and there were bits that
have puzzled me:

Questions regarding Dovecot's POP3 implementation
...ormance and security.
Before I go down that route of migrating away from qmail-pop3d, I'd
appreciate some answers and feedback on the following.
There is mention of the Maildir filename extension W= for virtual file
size here:
http://wiki.dovecot.org/POP3Server
However, I can't find any MDAs which support writing the filename in
this format. Maildrop seems to support S= only?
If Dovecot is only able to read W= in the filename, I would imagine
that it might make sense to have an MDA like Maildrop write the
message to disk, replacing all LF with CR+LF and finally write the
filename wit...

invoking LDA in .forward
Hi,
We're running a Debian server with system users where the mail is by
default delivered by postfix and procmail, before being served by
Dovecot (mail_location = mbox:~/Mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u) or read by
local MUAs, depending on users' preferences.
For people using mostly remote MUAs, it might be interesting to use
Dovecot's LDA. I read on http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA that this

Courier migrating issues: indexes, maildirsize, update query
Hi,
(my first post to the list)
I'm in the process of testing Dovecot to see whether it meets our needs
to replace our current Courier setup which serves well over 100.000
mailboxes (pop3 and imap: mysql with NFS)
So far dovecot seems pretty straight forward; however I ran into a
couple of things that I'm curious about.
1. What's the deal with

sendmail getting domain\user as email userId
About a year-and-a-half ago I wrote in a thread having this same subject about a problem my
sendmail server was having on my Samba4 AD/DC. To solve that problem at the time, I maintained
domain user entries in both the sam.ldb and in /etc/passwd, and did not have winbind specified
in /etc/nsswitch.conf. I am now trying to remove all users from /etc/passwd and use winbind.
Unfortunately, I'm

outstanding issues with 0.99.13
hi list,
i'm in the process of testing dovecot before a hopeful switchover from
uw-imap/qpopper to dovecot, primarily to get off of the uw-imap/mbox
combo and moved to Maildir. i think we've worked out the logistics to
avoid any service downtime, with only a short window of a few minutes
per user for when we convert from mbox to maildir format.
however, during testing a few issues have

Quick question...
Hi,
Here's the scenario.
I want to set up a mailbox so that when mail sent to the address is piped to
a processing application, instead of going to a mailbox.
One way I can do this is to set up a mailbox and then have an application
that checks to see if there's mail and then processes it.
(Old school Unix script)
Is there a way to set it up with dovecot?
(Cleaner solution)
Thx

sendmail getting domain\user as email userId
...the AD/DC will get "DOMAIN/user"
instead of "user". Therefore, not solved.
This functionality is inconsistent with the values returned by the same commands on a domain
member.
It currently breaks authentication for various facilities on the AD/DC, not limited to mail MTAs
and MDAs.
I've found a number of postings on this list about this problem. Some people, (Mike E.
(posting Thu Jul 21 12:30:40 2016) have found other work-arounds including using sssd in
nsswitch.conf instead of winbind. There are 10 postings on the bug report for people having

sendmail - smtp security/authentication & port 587 issues
Greetings,
I'm refining a CentOs configuration installation, now just over one month
old running on a colocated production server. Previously, we ran a version
of Fedora for over seven years.
Specifically, I'm reviewing our sendmail configuration, both with respect
to authentication and port usage.
Previously, we had the following line in the sendmail.mc line:

Multiple copies of a message
I have a problem and I don't know which part of the mail chain could be
causing it, although dovecot does seem to be the most logical source.
I get multiple copies of messages to my Inbox. I have just deleted 24 copies
of a newsletter from Computer Shopper. The worst example I have seen of this
had more than 90 copies. This doesn't happen to any subfolder of Inbox, just

Dovecot LDA and address extensions
I'm converting over a virtual user installation that used Postfix and
maildrop with a MySQL back-end for mailbox lookups to use Dovecot LDA.
The maildrop setup used a database table like:

Unexplainable problem with POP3 quotas
Greetings *
We are having a problem with POP3 quota warnings, and despite we dig
into the documentation, mailing list archives, google... we didn't
spot any light
We are running a self-compiled dovecot 1.1.7. The user base is in a
Postgres database. We'd like a quota warning message to be injected
into the maildir at 80% and 95% of occupation reached.
