device alias
Hi. I''d like to request a feature be added to zfs. Currently, on
SAN attached disk, zpool shows up with a big WWN for the disk. If
ZFS (or the zpool command, in particular) had a text field for
arbitrary information, it would be possible to add something that
would indicate what LUN on what array the disk in question might be.
This would make troubleshooting and general

Another MPT issue - kernel crash
Hi all,
I have faced yet another kernel panic that seems to be related to mpt
driver.
This time i was trying to add a new disk to a running system (snv_134)
and this new disk was not being detected...following a tip i ran the
lsitool to reset the bus and this lead to a system panic.
MPT driver : BAD TRAP: type=e (#pf Page fault) rp=ffffff001fc98020

Functions that cannot be traced by FBT under x86
Hi All:
In Solaris Dtrace User Guide, page 218, it says,
"Functions that do not create a stack frame on x86 systems cannot be
instrumented by FBT."
Then what are these functions?
What characteristics do they have?

Experience with Promise Tech. arrays/jbod''s?
Greetings,
In looking for inexpensive JBOD and/or RAID solutions to use with ZFS, I''ve
run across the recent "VTrak" SAS/SATA systems from Promise Technologies,
specifically their E-class and J-class series:

Any rhyme or reason to disk dev names?
Hello,
I am curious to know if there is an easy way to guess or identify the
device names of disks. Previously the /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 system made sense
to me... I had a SATA controller card with 8 ports, and they showed up with
the numbers 1-8 in the "t" position of the device name.
But I just built a new system with two LSI SAS HBAs in it, and my device
names are along the lines of:

So if you have any advice on the above or could help me put together an appropriate algorithm in either S or R, I would much appreciate hearing from you. Changing rpool device paths/drivers
Hello all,
It was often asked and discussed on the list about "how to
change rpool HDDs from AHCI to IDE mode" and back, with the
modern routine involving reconfiguration of the BIOS, bootup
from separate live media, simple import and export of the
rpool, and bootup from the rpool. The documented way is to
reinstall the OS upon HW changes. Both are inconvenient to
say the least.

Zfs deduplication
Will the material ever be posted. Looks there is some huge bugs with zfs
deduplication that the organizers do not want to post it also there is no
indication on sun website if there will be a deduplication feature. I think
its best they concentrate on improving zfs performance and speed with
compression enabled.

Abort due to systemic unresponsiveness
What is causing this error:
dtrace: processing aborted: Abort due to systemic unresponsiveness
It happens to my script which shows all the NFS operations coming
through common_dispatch() on a server.
I wasn''t the one running the test, so I don''t know how long it ran
before it died.
The script uses a couple of static probes and a couple fbt.
Thanks,

Implementation Question
Why does zfs define raidz/raidz2/mirror/stripe at the pool level instead of the filesystem/volume level?
A sample use case: two filesystems in a eight disk pool. The first filesystems is a stripe across four mirrors. The second filesystems is a raidz2. Both utilizing the free space in the 8 disk pool as needed.
Thanks in advance...

Is LSI SAS3081E-R suitable for a ZFS NAS ?
According to various posts the LSI SAS3081E-R seems to work well with OpenSolaris.
But I''ve got pretty chilled-out from my recent problems with Areca-1680''s.
Could anyone please confirm that the LSI SAS3081E-R works well ?
Is hotplug supported ?
Anything else I should know before buying one of these cards ?
Thanks,

device name changing
Hi.
If I create a zpool with the following command:
zpool create tank raidz2 da0 da1 da2 da3 da4 da5 da6 da7
and after a reboot the device names for some reason are changed so da2
and da5 are swapped, either by altering the LUN setting on the storage
or by switching cables/swapping disks etc.?
How will zfs handle that? Will it simply acknowledge that all devices
are present and the pool is

LSAI SAS SATA card and MB comptability questions?
Hello,
I am new to open solaris and am trying to setup a ZFS based storage solution.
I am looking at setting up a system with the following specs:
Intel BOXDG33FBC
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz
2 or 4 GB ram
For the drives I am looking at using a
LSI SAS3081E-R
I''ve been reading around and it sounds like LSI solutions work well in terms of compatability with solaris. Could someone help

Panic while scrubbing
Hello,
I am not sure if I am posting in the correct forum, but it seems somewhat zfs related, so I thought I''d share it.
While the machine was idle, I started a scrub. Around the time the scrubbing was supposed to be finished, the machine panicked.
This might be related to the ''metadata corruption'' that happened earlier to me. Here is the log, any ideas?
