storage servers crashing, hair being pulled out!
I have a trio of servers that like to reboot during high disk / network IO operations. They don't appear to panic, as I have kernel.panic = 0 in sysctl.conf. The syslog just shows normal messages, like samba complaining about browse master and then just syslogd starting up. The machines seem to crash when I'm not near the console, usually when I'm trying to pull data off them to

Copyright versus Licenses
...evelopers believe that including a Copyright notice is imperative with a Copyright License? If so, what advice do they have for those writing and contributing open source R libraries as to where this notice should go? Should that information perhaps be added to the R manual for extensions? SAS raid controllers
Is anyone running either the newish Adaptec 5805 or the new LSI (3ware) 9750 sas raid controllers in a production environment with Centos 5.3/5.4? The low price of these cards makes me suspicious, compared to the more expensive pre-merger 3ware cards and considerably more expensive Areca ARC-1680. I've been 'burned' by the low cost of Promise raid cards (just as this group pointed

virtual gigabit
Is there anyway to get gigabit networking for a fully virtualized guest? I''ve tried searching for this one, but all I get are results about gigabit networking for the host / dom0, nothing for domU. again, nic driver order
I have two servers with identical hardware ... TYAN i3210w system boards with dual intel gigabit interfaces, and a PCI intel gigabit nic. I'm running Centos 5.4, x86_64, 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5 Every other time I reboot, the nics initialize in a different order. anaconda had setup /etc/modprobe.conf with alias lines for the cards: alias eth0 e1000 alias eth1 e1000e alias eth2 e1000e However,

ot: vlans and vmware
Does anyone have VLAN tagging working from within a guest on vmware-server? I'm running a centos 4.5 guest on a centos 5 host with vmware server 1.04and I've tried creating vlans using both the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts method and just doing it from the cli via vconfig. Either way appears to work, the OS creates the vlans, but I think vmware's network adapter must be eating the

apache slow on lan transfers?
When I download a file from apache on the lan (gigabit lan), I only get 3-4mbps of download speed, opposed to accessing the file via FTP or SMB which results in 500+ mbps of transfer speed. As far as I know, I'm running the stock apache (httpd) that is distributed with centos 5.3, and haven't changed anything in the config file with the exception of setting up various virtual directories.

HA Storage Cookbook?
Hello List, Can anyone recommend some sites regarding building high-availability storage networks using centos (or the upstream providers brand name)? I need to have approx 2-3 tb of storage available via iscsi and smb, but worry about having it all on a single server. Most of the HA articles I'm reading deal with application high availability, but not storage. Right now I have a centos 4.6

Promise EX16650 under 5.2?
Does anyone have experience using the Supertrak EX16650 sas controller under Centos 5.2? The Promise website claims RHEL 5.2 support was added Sept '08. I figure the card might very well be detected, but how about the management gui - it appears to use some sort of web interface, but the card has no ethernet jack, so it must rely on some special driver to access this? Any information is

GNOME + Firefox - Mouse froze - what key combination to revive?
Earlier, I was using GNOME and Firefox and the Mouse died. I had to kill the power, to get the box going again, because it doesn't have a reset switch; which is *not* an elegant way to get going. What key combination would get me going or to a shell? CentOS 5, fully updated, 32 bit. TIA!

OT supermicro server chassis?
Does anyone have a supermicro 942i server chassis? I'm trying to figure out if it has a true nine 5.25" drive bays, or if the one occupied by the 3.5" caddy is special / crippled. What I want to do is install three of the supermicro 5x3 hot swap backplanes and I'm gunshy about buying one site unseen. Thanks! Gordon

OT: iscsi target bind to two addresses?
Does anyone know off hand how to bind iscsi enterprise target to two distinct addresses. Lets say I have a machine that has a bunch of interfaces on it, with different subnets. Rather than have ietd broadcast itself on all interfaces (the default), I would like to limit it to only two interfaces. I have edited the init.d startup script with --address x.x.x.x which works, but I tried using the

Can anyone recommend a repo for the latest version of Bacula, compiled for x64? I see Singh has the i386 version in his Centos-Misc repo, but nothing shows up when I do a yum list bacula* on my 64bit systems. Thanks for any advice! Gordon

broadcom 802.3ad
Does anyone have some tips for setting up Broadcom's 802.3AD support or just getting their driver compiled / installed? First off, I noticed redhat claims the broadcom bcm5708 driver has been added to the rhel4 kernel. But I don't see /proc/net/nicinfo which broadcom claims the driver creates when it's successfully initialized. So, I'm trying to build the driver based on the

kernel-devel largesmp or ELlarge?
I'm having trouble updating my iscsitarget modules, and it seems to be related to a naming convention mixup? here's the output of the build command: [root at vmhost ~]# rpmbuild --rebuild --sign iscsitarget-0.4.14.96-0.amherst.src.rpm Installing iscsitarget-0.4.14.96-0.amherst.src.rpm error: Failed build dependencies: kernel-devel = 2.6.9-42.0.10.ELlarge is needed by

xeon quad core?
Can anyone share their experience with installing RHEL / Centos (latest production release) on the Dell 2950 (or 2900) with the quad-core e5310 processor? Does anyone know what chipset Dell is using on this box? I've got one on the way, and I'm hoping to use centos as the 'host' OS for several virtual machines (some of them Windows pigs), running vmware server. some of the

OT: vmware server not accepting root password?
Sorry for the OT question; I'm hoping someone else has a similar setup and ran into this same problem? For some reason, not sure what I changed, my vmware server is no longer accepting the root login for the management console or web mui interface. I'm certain the password is correct, and I've even reset root's password to make sure. VMware seems to be running ok, I can access
