Current thinking on backups ?
...veral layers of backup in place ... - The two dovecot servers replicate to each via a Tinc vpn mesh. That gives email resiliency. - All mail is replicated via offlineimap to a 3rd server over that Tinc vpn. It's on the mesh, it has space, so why not ? - All mail is replicated as well as via mbsync to a zfs dataset on my main media server at home once an hour. - That zfs dataset (and others) is snapshot'd hourly, and zfs send/recv to a backup box nightly. Outside of dovecot procedures, I find mbsync to work extremely well. It was easy enough to set up a systemd timer and service to p...

Current thinking on backups ?
Hi, What are people doing for backups ? My current process is LVM snapshot and backup from that to NFS share. But there seems to be hints around the internet that people use/abuse "doveadm backup" for backup purposes even though it seems its original intention was for transferring mailboxes between dovecot instances. Assuming its ok to "doveadm backup" to an NFS share, is it

Manually creating dovecot- files after isync/mbsync mirror
Hi everyone I'm using isync 1.0.5 patched to do recursive folder listing and mirroring mail from an external party's IMAP server to a local Maildir, which will be accessed by Dovecot 2.0.9. In order to prevent IMAP clients from re-downloading their mail, when connecting to Dovecot, I'm busy writing a script to generate appropriate dovecot-uidlist and dovecot-uidvalidity files, per

recursive mail_location?
Forgive what may be a newby question, but I'm trying to get a new setup working, and there are many different things confusing me. I'm trying for a gnus + dovecot + mbsync arrangement, with mbsync writing to maildirs, and gnus reading from those dirs with a dovecot invocation. Fairly standard, I think. I have multiple email accounts I'm trying to sync, all of them gmail. My problem is that mbsync creates one maildir structure for each mailbox in each account. So...

minimal configuration for lucene fts
Hi, I'm using dovecot (version 2.2.13 on archlinux) in the simplest, no-brainer way possible. It sits between mbsync, which I use to fetch mail from servers, and Gnus, my MUA. Both mbsync and Gnus connect to dovecot with an invocation like this: /usr/lib/dovecot/imap -o mail_location=maildir:$HOME/.mail/ea/ I have three different mail accounts, all that changes is the final directory on the mail_location path a...

migrate Maildir to mdbox
...d some time I reviewed my Dovecot configuration and changed a couple of things, including mailbox format. Now I would like to migrate e-mail (about 20G -- I use this server as an e-mail archive). The Maildir is available on the (old) hard disk. The new dovecot is running. What should I use? Would mbsync work? I would prefer a solution that does not mess up the UUIDs, but I can live with that too. $ dovecot --version 2.2.27 (c0f36b0) Incidentally, would you recommend sdbox or mdbox? Lots of e-mails, many of them have large attachments. best, Tamas

IMAP to Maildir Migration preserving UIDs?
...ent as possible. The mailbox format I would want to use is Maildir++. The storage format used by the current server is unknown, and I don't look forward to trying to reverse-engineer it. This leaves me with the option of reading the mailboxes using IMAP. There are tools like offlineimap or mbsync, and they do store the UID and UIDVALIDITY info. The last piece of the puzzle is a process to properly create the dovecot-uidlist and dovecot-uidvalidity files. So far I wasn't able to find anything on this. Are there any tips? Are there any tools available to do this job, or part of it? I...

dovecot sieve duplicates detection
...e is global to all folders, is there a way to restrict >> the search in one folder only. > > You can set the :uniqueid parameter accordingly. > > Regards, > > Stephan. Thank you, Stephan. Yes, I meant the Sieve duplicate extension. I am using a program to import email (mbsync), which use the IMAP append function. Sometimes, the import fail and I have to restart the program. Unfortunately, the same emails are imported again. I found a fix by using a dovecot IMAP sieve script executed on the APPEND action (https://wiki.dovecot.org/Pigeonhole/Sieve/Plugins/IMAPSieve)....

Converting mailboxes from one Maildir format to another
I am currently running dovecot 2.0.9 on a CentOS 6 server with the following layout for mailboxes: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir I would like to change the layout to this format to match the output of other software packages such as offlineimap, mbsync, etc: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:LAYOUT=fs:INBOX=~/Maildir/INBOX Is there a way to convert the mailbox layout for all mail accounts currently on the server? I was looking at dsync, but there aren't any Maildir <--> Maildir examples. I was also looking at potentially writing a sc...

How to manage email with an ISP restricted mailbox size?
...d spam filtering that works well - Have remote server with plenty of disk space - Want to use remote server for IMAP access to archive of email to avoid 1Gb ISP mailbox limit Options I tried: 1. Use ISP email via IMAP and periodically backup / archive messages to remote server with something like mbsync / isync to maildir format. Delete old messages on ISP server safe in knowledge they are backed up on my server. QUESTION: how to access those archives via IMAP (read only is OK)? 2. Use ISP email for sending messages only. Use Getmail / Fetchmail to move messages to remote server and run Dovecot t...

IMAP Migration Tools
Hi, I am looking for tools to migrate Mails from one IMAP-Server to another. Until now I have always used imapsync, but it seems very slow. Even over a 2x10GB/s connection I only get speeds of about 600KiB/s, because the programm always pauses betweeen every single mail. Does anyone here have a suggestion for an alternative? Thanks in advance Julian

Problems Converting from Cyrus to Dovecot (cyrus2dovecot)
Hello, Because it did not work ? In a similar situation, we where forced to use isync/mbsync in imap to imap mode because dsync did not work. It was reported here more than a year ago (May 2014). Time to time, I see the same report from other trying to use dsync to do a migration to dovecot. Dsync is a very appealing and elegant solution to this usage, but it does not always work in re...
