Assuming you follow the installation instructions, and install the Mbrola and
other goodies for all the possible different voices, then you can, while running festival
in a terminal window, run the following commands (in 195):
(SayText "This is the default voice. It sounds like K.E.D. Diphone?")
(tts "text_to_read" nil)
(voice_cstr_us_awb_arctic_mu...

SAPI (Speech Synthesis API)
...n of it.
Although English speech is well-supported in
Linux, speech in languages like Chinese,
Japanese and Korean is not. Commercial
offerings are usually SAPI 5 speech engines, but
I can't find any mention anywhere of running
SAPI 5 under Wine.
Thanks. Silas
(PS - yes I do know about MBROLA, but it lacks
a
TTS front-end for Asian voices and it has no
support for Chinese at all. There are also
occasionally some Windows speech synthesisers
which are not SAPI-based and which will run
under Wine, e.g. Bider's Speech Plus for
Chinese, but that too has its limitations.

Festival and french language
Anybody has experirence with Festival + french voice ?
I read "2.1.3 .--The French language
Festival does not (at the moment) implement yet the French language
but it's not difficult to make it work with the Mbrola synthesizer
which offers high quality French voices."
from the website
http://www.pollock-nageoire.net/festival/festival-english003.html#toc5
but "not difficult" has not the same meaning for everybody....

Demo Weather Report AGI v2.0
...e able to generate a .wav
file. For Cepstral you need to be able to run the "theta"
utility and be able to generate a .wav file.
Festival can be found at http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival/ The
software is free and includes several voices. The voice on the demo is the
voice_us2_mbrola. This voice is not included in the main Festival package,
but a link to MBROLA is on the Festival site. Personally I don't like any
of the Festival voices.
Cepstral can be found at http://www.cepstral.com. The software is is
US$30.00 for one voice, it runs on Linux and Windows and can be p...

"Unable to find path from G729A to ULAW" on Sipphone.com
I seem to be having a problem with transcoding and/or agreeing on a
valid codec. I am running a new image pulled from CVS at 1:30 PM CST.
The issue occurs when I try to make a call to a toll-free number over
sipphone.com.
Here's what I see in the console:
