MAX_OPEN_FILES - message & changeing
Nguyen Cao Dat asked about this: ERROR! Out of file structures - perhaps increase MAX_OPEN_FILES? As it happens I have started getting them too - on a PC Application server - the cause seems to be lots of files needed to be open to run applications - Lotus apps seems to be a particular culprit, but experiments indicate that even opening help on Microsoft Word opens 13 files! Out of file structures
Hi all, does anybody knows about the following Error ?!??! [2000/09/25 17:40:55, 0] smbd/files.c:file_new(85) ERROR! Out of file structures seems to be the max open files problem, am I right ? We did a research in some news and usergroups and in some answers it was mentioned, to compile samba with the sfio package to avoid using the select(3). Is that right ? Does anybody has any

Clearcase, Samba, and mnode values
...Or should I expect it to eat up initially a few gigs of memory and then stay relatively stable, recognizing that over time the running system will slowly eat up memory (but not all in 12 hours). 2. IBM has suggested making sure these conditions are met for mnode values on Windows clients and the MAX_OPEN_FILES is big enough on the Samba side: https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21169548 Basically saying that for a 64 bit Clearcase/Samba server, the max mnode values should be set to 800 and not the default 1800. Anyone with experience with this? We have not seen the particular errors...

samba and clearcase (PR#7829)
Hi Jeremy, thanks for the tip but ...(there's always a but) if I do this (increase MAX_OPEN_FILES to 1024), I get an error in log.smb: Can't create or use IPC area. Error was File exists I'm using FAST_SHARE_MODES to compile samba. Does this take up too much space or is there something else wrong? Error: Can't create or use IPC area. Error was File exists.
I had to increase the MAX_OPEN_FILES Parameter in "local.h". Since then i get the error in the logfile: Can't create or use IPC area. Error was File exists. Are there any solutions for this problem? I found similar questions but no answers in the digests. Olaf Dreyer

...bytes) to use between smbd processes. You should never change this parameter unless you have studied the source and know what you are doing. This parameter defaults to 1024 multiplied by the setting of the maximum number of open files in the file local.h in the Samba source code. MAX_OPEN_FILES is normally set to 100, so this parameter defaults to 102400 bytes. and John Blair's excellent book indicates it is a hacker option. As far as I can see there is no other documentation on this option. However I have a server (used for software distribution) to 100+ NT clients and it...
