R-beta: Splus vs R
> If I were Mathsoft I would be less than pleased > at the development of R and would try to stop it if I could. I would not assume that Mathsoft must have such a negative view towards R. The reasons are roughly summarized by the analogy that a smaller part of a big pie is often better than a bigger part of a smal...

R-beta: Re: S Compatibility
...t most people don't know that there is a >difference, and these days so few people can get access to the non-plussed >version, I wonder how important it is to make the distinction. :-( How important is it to avoid being sued, or less facetiously, what is the legal status of R? If I were Mathsoft I would be less than pleased at the development of R and would try to stop it if I could. I have been wondering for some time if this is possible. But I am not a lawyer and the issue seems very unclear to me. I suppose the argument that the S language (as opposed to the S-PLUS product) is public d...

R-beta: Re: Choice of Linux
...in that RedHat Linux has not only operated well, and is remarkably easy to set up, but seems to work as well as any Linux distribution with R. The default X-Windows setup looks pretty similar to MS Windows, which may make the transition easier. In fact, it was the on/off - finally off attitude of MathSoft toward producing a Linux version of S-Plus that started me looking for a replacement (at that time I was running Slackware, which also worked well, but was harder to set up). R-beta: mfg weirdness + future of graphics pars
...system does not work when devices can be resized.... ... > Does anyone have any thoughts about how important it is to retain > compatibility with the S way of doing things? I don't see much value in even trying to maintain compatibility at this level. The big corporate development at MathSoft Seattle has been the acquisition of Axum, so the inventive energy and experience are in place to give the graphics system (of S-PLUS at any rate) the shake-up of its life. S-PLUS 4.0 is effectively an Axum dll, in fact, so the tail already wags the dog. What next? Compatibility is a worthwhile id...

Difference amongst spline smoothers
...all, Anybody knows about the difference amongst various spline smoothers, specifically in R, 'bs' (by default a cubic spline), 'ns', smooth.spline with roughness penalty along with many other smoothers? I've consulted serveral books like 'S-plus Guide to Statistics' by Mathsoft, Ripley and Venables' Splus book and Eubank's Spline Smoothing, but I was still looking for a substantial discussion on the difference in using these smoothers. I try to put the question clear or maybe somebody can provide some sources for reference. If possible, I'd also like to see so...

Modern Marketing Research Combinatorial Computations: Shapley Value versus TURF Tools, Proceedings of 1998 International S-Plus User Conference, Oct. 8-9, 1998, Washington, DC, MathSoft Inc. Does anyone have this paper? Any functions to implement Shapley values in R (or S+)? I wrote a TURF function that works well, but now I need to calculate Shapley Values. Any help with is is appreciated. Thanks, Walt -- ________________________ Walter R. Paczkowski, Ph.D. Data Ana...

cbind.data.frame(.) S/R incompatibility
In S-plus (5.1), > cbind(data.frame(x=1,y=2), data.frame(x=4,u=3)) x y x1 u 1 1 2 4 3 whereas in R, the 3rd name is "x", the same as the 1st one. I think R should behave the same as S+5.1.. data frames with non-unique row.names (PR#98)
...---------- >>>>> or am I completely wrong, and there should be a way you can >>>>> construct a data.frame with non-unique row.names ??? MM> ------------------------------------------------------------------ It seems I am wrong -- at least in the eyes of Mathsoft's S-plus 5 writers: data.frame() in S-plus 5.0r2's has a new argument dup.names.ok = F which you can set to TRUE in order to construct data.frames with non-unique row.names. Note however that John Chamber's S version 4 (which underlies S-plus 5) does NOT have such an argument....
