This solution is better expressed in Perl, Python, Ruby, Lua, JavaScript?probably dozens of languages. Yeah, you're right, I am. An associative array was the first thing I thought of, then realized BASH doesn't do those.? I honestly expected there to be a fairly

Tools For Preparing Data For Analysis
...gestions, especially for volunteers who are willing to evaluate new candidates. SAS is fine if you're not paying for the license out of your own pocket. But maybe one reason you're using R is you don't have thousands of spare dollars. Using Java for data cleaning is an exercise in sado-masochism, Java has a learning curve (almost) as difficult as C++. There are different types of data transformation, and for some data preparation problems an all-purpose programming language is a good choice ( i.e. Perl , or maybe Python/Ruby ). Perl, for example, has excellent regular expression facilitie...

Oh, I don?t know, there must be a way to do it without associative arrays, but you?d only get points for the masochism value in doing without.

Much better...

PDC: Logging out from Windows XP SP2 takes a long time
I have samba set up as primary domain controller, and have problems with my Windows XP SP2 machines. Logging in is quick, but most of the time (nine out of ten times) the logout process takes a long time - I do end up rebooting, but once I let it stay and it took a whole hour before it was logged out. It seems to act the same way for all users. Possible sources already eliminated: - I have

R under Ubuntu 8.10 / Wine
It looks as if installing R under Ubuntu 8.10 is going to be much more complicated than I thought it was going to be. I hadn't realized that it would depend on installing so many other packages (about 23, it seems), many of which also have their own dependencies. So I wondered whether all of these are really essential, and whether there is a single package anywhere that includes them all for

what is R best for; what should one learn in addition to R
Hi, I've been working with R for a couple of years, and I've been able to get most of the things done that I needed (sometimes in a roundabout way). A few experienced statisticians told me that R is best for interactive data analysis, but for large-scale computations, one needs something else. I understand that this all depends on what you are trying to accomplish, and R offers many ways

CentOS 4.4 on Dell PE 6400 - not rebooting ...
Hi All, This is my first post ... I *HAD* been trying to get RHEL AS 4 onto this Dell PE 6400/700, but it just wouldn't go without some weird tweaking. I am VERY happy to say that CentOS 4.4 installed without a hitch! NICELY done folks! The only real issue for me is that the machine fails to reboot or shutdown correctly. It requires physical interaction with the power switch,

extending the derivs table/fools rushing in
I added "plogis" to the derivative table in the development version of R; the patch against yesterday's R-devel src/deriv/main.c is available at http://www.zoology.ufl.edu/bolker/deriv_patch.txt . I pretty much followed the framework of the other symbols; here was my incantation - } else if (CAR(expr) == PlogisSymbol) { - ans = simplify(TimesSymbol, -

GRE over IPSec VPN
Hey guys I''ve been beating my head on this for a few hours. Maybe it is just a stupid configuration error you can point me at. First here is a small diagram of what I am trying to configure: http://6bit.com/img/netdiag.png Currently I only have Shorewall running on the host on the right of the diagram until I can get this working then I''ll add it to the other host as well.
