Authentication
I am a relative new user of samba (well not to new), but I would like to authenticate samba through ldap, and ldap only. I don;t want to have to manage the /etc/passwd file aswell. Can this be accomplished all on 1 machine (for example running samba and openldap on the same machine), with the openldap db being the only user/group db I need to maintain. If so, can anyone point me towards some

Doubts about Winbindd
Hi, I'm trying to set up a PDC using Samba on a Linux server. I need to the linux clients, using KDE desktop, log in the PDC using the KDE login box. I think I could use the 'winbindd' to do what I need but, I still have some questions: 1. Do I need to set up winbindd on each Linux client to log on the Linux PDC ? 2. Do I need to set up winbindd on the Linux PDC

Samba 3.0 and Active Directory Replication
I have been following the development ot Samba 3.0 with great interest. There is something that still confuses me. Can Samba 3.0 join a Windows 2000 network as a domain controller and replicate Active Directory information with existing Windows 2000 domain controllers? If Samba 3.0 is the only domain controller on a network with Windows 2000/XP clients, will the clients see it as a domain

LDAP/Samba Groups question
...ts for me was the unified local/samba accounts (whereas group membership and suthentication can be controlled from a single source)..in addition, LDAP seems to be a bit more versatile for plugging into other solutions down the road. Here is a small howto on LDAP that I was reference to: http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/ldap-auth.php If anyone would like to send some feedback as to other pro's and con's of either these methods (homogeneous samba/ldap authenticated samba) I am sure others on the group would benefit and appreciate the help. I am trying to iron out some logistics, and the more...

2 (Suse), one NT 4 server machine and 5 user databases???
I currently have a setup of 1 NT 4.0 PDC server and to SUSE boxes sharing via a samba share. I seem to have to make 5 different usename/password databases. 1 for NT, 2 for each SuSe box (One Linux and one Samba). Is there a way to have 1 or maybe two databases to update? I've read about LDAP on other connections but I'm a little confused as to what is the best approach. Oh

PDC/Roving Profiles/and Password Encryption
Hi All, Well, despite my general idiocy I've managed to get PDC and roving profiles working perfectly in my test situation. Obviously, this isn't good enough since computers are the devil, so I've run into some more problems. Fortunately for the Samba team, this isn't a problem with Samba - I think it's more a problem with how our network is set up here. Basically,

pxe weirdness
I know that this is not a pxelinux/syslinux question (yet), but I am having a weird issue with a HP ML370. It is using HP UNDI PXE 2.1 (build 082) v 3.1.15 I successfully get an IP address from my DHCP server, but the machine fails when it attempts to make it's TFTP connection with: "PXE-E32 - TFTP Open timeout" It never gets the pxelinux.0 file. The odd thing I noticed was

load password users in Ldap
Hello, I'm new in Samba Ldap. I use samba-2.2.3a and openldap2-2.1.4-46. I am going to load in Ldap a lot of users in a ldif file as it is shown below. But I don't know how to put samba password. I can use: smbpasswd juan1 and then the fields lmPassword and ntPassword are changed. In this way, after load all users in Ldap I would need a script to do a smbpasswd for each user

Adding a machine; I think I am onto something
Parameters are: Samba 2.2.7a PDC setup with LDAP includeing posix authentication for Linux. OK, the tutorial I've based my setup on is the Mandrake tutorial found at http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/ldap-auth.php Works great for autenticateing Linux from LDAP but it is really sparse on the Samba side of things. Esepcially when it comes to adding machine trust accounts. So anyway I have some theories I would like verified. I've found that I can add a posix based machine nam...

Windows Remote Install
I saw a section entitled "PXELINUX and the Windows Remote Install Server", but there was nothing below it. I'm trying to figure out how to do this. Any advise would be appreciated. Do you suggest PXE, Etherboot, or Netboot? Could someone explain the difference? I still haven't figured out how all this fits together yet. Thanks.
