Your modified spec file got me past that point and I just wanted to say thank you and to let you know that that did the trick. The rpm build utilities have changed with Redhat 8.0. I'm not sure if these changes have been noted in the current sources, but the "makerpms.sh" script in the src/packaging/Redhat directory no longer works with Redhat 8.0 without the change below. I made rpms for Fedora Core 1 by using "rpmbuild --rebuild" on the ".src.rpm" file that is in the Fedora section of the samba download area. Are my results the same as they would be if I downloaded the tar file and ran the packaging/Fedora "makerpms.sh" script? Is one way preferred? Thanks, Mark

I downloaded the tar.gz file for 3.0.27a and I noticed there is not a Fedora directory inside the packaging directory. I'm fairly certain there used to be one in older versions. I'm groping now to figure out how to build rpms for Fedora 4, which I know is a little old but I don't have resources to upgrade the OS now. Was it intentionally removed? Mark

Fellow samba users, I had some problems with trying to get samba running properly on Linux (RedHat 5.2), but now I've got it working. Two things I learned: 1) Use the packaging/RedHat/makerpms.sh script. It will generate a RedHat compatible rpm for you. Been trying to run this on FC3 pulling stuff off a NT4 PDC - it just segfaults on 3.0.21 & 3.0.21a I'm building the RPMS from the tar ball on the host using the makerpms.sh script Reverted to the 3.0.10 issued by Fedora and no segfault. From what I can see (with strace) it segfaults while reading from the socket connecting the PDC - not the first read, but after quite a few gettimeofday()/read() operations. Will post more info if anyone is interested.
